Yep definitely the GTi entire engine and drivetrain would be the same as the RS. S3 is a different beast, there are more differences there than people realise.

so after taking a manual (RS thankfully) out for a spin this morning, I can now confirm with confidence that its gearbox, although very nice, unfortunately doesn't come close to the golf R's gearbox : (( .. hence I've now been converted to DSG (for Octavia RS) at least .. love those paddles! ; )

but wtf is with that wheel spin?!? .. even on stock it's pretty damn noticable - apart from AWD, what would be the best way to (help) overcome what I imaging would be extreme levels of spin once the car is tuned??

I run almost RS levels of power, more torque & have crappier touring tyres & except from a standing start or in the wet (gears 1-3), wheelspin is up to how silly my right foot is.

What tyres were on the test car?

Shock absorbers, springs, ALK, better tyres will all help but nothing will cure the wheelspin (maybe a Quaiffe diff?). The RS is no Golf R & it isn't trying to be one - GTI would be equally bad.

yeah I just didn't realise that there was such a massive difference between GTI and R (given the relatively lesser difference in price) ... oh well, looks like I'll have a few mods to procure after getting my hands on an RS ; )

LOL...that's why there's no point in doing any standing start drags in any FWD as its pointless no matter how much power you have. Hence the fun is during rolling accelerations. I guess you now know whyon our last cruise I said my next car has gotta be an awd!!!

I haven't had the liberty to drive a manual Golf R yet and probably won't want to any time soon so I couldn't comment on the gearbox comparison to it or the S3 but then again, both those cars are much more pricier vehicles.
