    Octavia III VRS 162TSI Oil Temperature

    Hey all,

    what's everyone's oil temperatures sit at normal/suburban driving vs highway?

    Mine sits around 100-105 during suburban and even stop start traffic but around 108-112 deg C on highway. Cruising at 100km/h it is usually 108-109 unless I go up hill then it climbs a few deg and settles back down. At 110km/h it sits 110-112deg C.

    Compared to my previous 1z octavia rs it is average 5-6deg C higher, same for my previous car before that. I still have the old octavia and took it for a few hours drive and confirmed in the same ambient conditions the oil temp does sit lower.

    Just wondering if other people are seeing the same.

    I'd put it down to crap VW sensors. Certainly the water temp has never been accurate.

    I didn't realise the MK2 had an oil temp readout.

    possible, but 5-6 deg c is a big difference for a thermistor they are generally very accurate.

    I would think the water temperature gauge signal is damped on purpose so the driver can't see actual temp fluctuations to the second and get worried.

    The oil temp read out on the mk2 is in the maxidot display with all the other driving data, can't remember if it had to be enabled but I don't think so. In the mk3 you can select if you want it displayed in the list or not. It may have only been on later mk2's, mine was my13.

    Yeah it wasn't shown in the options in Mk2, maybe in the Mk2.5 The temp guage itself ie water is a bit artificial, but the thermostat is set to keep them at 85C in the Petrol RS. I saw when mine drifted that they are pretty accurate, they just ignore little fluctuations of a few degrees but move anymore than that.

    I had a MY11 mk2 RS and it had oil temp in the MFD if you scrolled through. My Mk3 1.4tsi certainly has much higher temps. 95-105 is "normal" and any spirited driving it can get high very quickly. With lots of continuous load (i.e. mountain driving) with not really going over 4k, i've seen 130 deg c on the oil temp reading. I'd personally prefer it lower than that (not to exceed 110deg if possible) but they seem to be built with that in mind?

    This is exactly the reason why temperature gauges get removed from cars and replaced by a light.

Maybe it's not doing outright damage but I wonder how they get away with keeping 15k service intervals with sustained high oil temps like that. I do a lot of highway driving for hours each day so it doesn't get much of a break to cool down.

    None of my other cars have run this high normally, even my track car needs a fair bit of pushing before it gets over 110deg.

    Also consider that these engines are already known for high oil consumption I would rather it run cooler than hotter.

    And yes I know someone is going to jump in here saying how synthetic oils are fine up to 150deg etc but I still wouldn't want to be sitting at that temp day in day out and expect the engine to last a long time and not consume oil.

    I'm getting the same temps as you are with the same driving conditions. perfectly normal. nothing to worry about.

    Yep, I agree with you, 130 deg plus 15k service intervals worry me (I change at 10k)
    Daily driving in my (stage2) Octavia vRS I rarely see over 110 deg
    At the track it hits 120 every lap

    Agree - while high qualitty oils may be able to take over 130 deg I would be concerned about doing this frequently for 15k

    The Merc A250 has 2 year 25k service interval - freaks me out!

    Ok great, mainly I was just trying to find out whether mine was abnormal or not for this engine.
