In my experience after tapping a paddle in auto the system defaults back to D after 8 seconds or when you come to a complete stop.
If I want to override this I simply flick the lever left to manual and straight back to D again.

Yes, same, tap the paddle and you have manual control for 8 seconds
To force it back into auto mode hold the up paddle for over 1 second
