It was a totally different company then with totally different cars at a totally different price-point with totally different quality & a totally different import structure.

Skoda's selling point back in the 70s was that it was the cheapest car you could buy.

??? My sister-in-law has an XV CVT and I have a Golf 90 TSI manual. One has 110kW and the other has 90kW and torque almost the same. Well, you'd never know it in the driving because the Golf is a much gruntier feeling car with useable torque spread wide while the XV relies on the CVT to do its slipping to keep it in the narrow torque band. A fair bit extra weight hurts it too. Her mid-range XV cost over $10k more than my Golf but isn't half the car, and this comes from a Subaru owner and admirer (although less of their more recent stuff).

Thanks for the input. This was from my own perspective (is it really that hard to comprehend on these forums?) and as we've all seen from your posts (here and on other forums) you love your Golf. I particularly enjoy the relevance of your comments - I drove a DSG Golf, and bought a manual XV and commented from that perspective, yet you're giving me information on a CVT XV and a manual Golf?

As long as you are happy, that's all that matters.

I've owned some real mungers in the past that I have dearly loved and my mates have just stood there shaking their head in disbelief.

If we all liked the same stuff then we'd all be driving Wartburgs.

So went spoke to different dealer today which I was recommend by a very helpful member, and not only did he do an awesome price he also educated me a little on the car, 2015 model, around April delivery, $43250 drive away, leather seats, tech pack, black pack, alarm, extended warranty. Or 42250 without leather. 11% off the full retail. Off to try a 328i most likely tomorrow and should have made my decision by end of the week, but at that price it really does make me happy, especially when every other dealer wouldn't budge from 45k. I know it's only a couple grand less but at 45k I can't help but feel that it starts to take me into a different choice of car, even if second hand.
