Dunno - it's just what it is. Just had a look at my fuel spreadsheet & for 2014 it's $900 exactly for 8832km
I'll start by saying I'm a really economical driver. Daryl Eastlake (remember him?) & I won $5k each (his went to the Cancer Council) off Shell about 7 years back for driving a 1.6L(?) MkV slushbox Golf running on ULP from Parramatta to the Blue Mountains & back. We averaged 3.7L/100km for a 160km loop. That husband/wife team that has all the economy records gave us a "masterclass" before we started.
In your case, you have AWD. IMO, AWD is 15-20% less efficient than FWD. So if you get 8L/100 then the same setup with FWD will be getting <7L/100. Plus I assume the Tiguan is a bit porkier, probably has heavier wheels & more wind resistance.
I get good economy out of my car because:
a) I do all the basic "economical driving" tricks - car is properly maintained, good fuel, slightly higher tyre pressures (36+psi), no roof racks, no unnecessary junk in car, clean car.
b) I look a long way down the road & try & anticipate traffic flow so that I don't come to a dead stop. This includes keeping a reasonable gap beteen me & the car in front so that when they brake I can just back off the accelerator.
c) I rarely do short trips. Generally I get in the car & do at least 10km & usually 40+km, so everything gets up to temp nicely.
d) I commute against the traffic flow & try & leave for work before 7am (or after 9.00) & leave work around 4.30 (or 6.30). It's 45km each way, mostly motorway. Usually we are doing 80-90kmh which is optimal for economy.
e) I don't use shopper dockets. I do use MotorMouth to find the cheapest fuel that is near where I'm driving. eg: Yesterday, I filled up for 5c cheaper ($1.52 98ron) than anywhere else in my area. Coles are more expensive than the other big brands so the 4c is really only 2c.
f) My engines been Bluefin remapped. If you don't (can't) use the power then generally it converts into better economy.
Good luck with getting a new job. I was un/under-employed in 2007 for 9 months. Got me stuffed how people can want to do it for years on end and I fee sorry for those that want to work but can't find employment.

Well calibrated right foot.
My missus reckons she can't drive my car without whel spinning. She just has a lousy technique - it's only 120kw atw.
I used to have access to a lot of high powered cars. First couple of throttle applications could be embarrassing but you just had to recalibrate the brain & the foot (toe) and most of them were very driveable off a standing start.

as brad pointed out - well calibrated right foot that knows "when".
i've mastered it that i hardly ever get axle tramp, even in the wet.
i can launch to a 100 from standstill in 6 secs flat without the need of an anti-lift kit, or dog-bone mounts or similar axle-tramp prevention gadgets. just my right foot combined with hand & butt feelings
hehehehe.

install those things and your launches will be better
then you can use your hands and butt for other things.

Does the RS have launch control?

DSG models do.
Bit the bullet, now the proud owner of a Corrida Red TDI Elegance Wagon. Pick up Wednesday, have got some nice black rims to go on and a mate to do dark tint. Happy with the change over works out my vRS has cost me $85.50 p/week in depreciation over 4.5 years.

i don't know if the eibach prokit springs help with any of the axle-tramping...probably.
tyres = contisportcontact5
pressures = front - 38 psi; rear - 36 psi
yup.
without launch control, i only managed to get 6.2 secs.
i haven't done any timings since i had the dsg performance tune mapped.
