Would you really be able to sit back & allow the car to do the braking down to zero?

We had ACC & some form of city-assist radar braking on a Mondeo a few years back & it was hopeless. On the motorway it left a huge gap to the car in front so everyone just kept diving in & pushing you further back in the freight train.

The radar braking put my missus up the clacker of a Hi-Ace & did $800 damage (it was probably 80% her fault but the way it worked was inconsistant).

I think if you are motoring along doing 80-110kmh & the traffic in front is slowing dramatically & the car starts braking for you & you realise the traffic is stopped that you wouldn't just sit back & let the car do the work right down to zero kmh.

It's supposed to be a safety aid not a replacement for doing the job of driving.

Active or not, it's not really a good idea to have cruise control on if you would be getting down to 0 anyway. Unless you mean the car in front emergency brakes, but I would think there would be other warnings/actions if that happened. I hardly use CC except once in more open freeways our highways. It's pointless in suburban areas.

Never have had (or even driven) a car with ACC before but I expected that you might get in the habit of using it in some sonarios like traffic jams where constant stop and go is irritating however I expect that if the system insists on allowing a "safe" gap in front then people would be cutting in all the time anyway.

As it is on the highways/freeways, I wish more people would use their cruise control so that ACC wouldn't be needed ! (don't people love to allow their speed to drift and annoy those happy to be at a constant speed !).

A mate of mine up in BNE has a 2012 C-Class with ACC. He finds it really good for motorways where the speed is a bit all over the shop (varying from 80-100). Apparently it doesn't leave a huge gap.

I'm assuming it's a lot smarter / better implemented than the system in the Mondeo. I couldn't even understand the usage instructions in the Mondeo & a fair whack of my job is reading badly written manuals & comprehending WTF they are talking about so it's possible even the people at Ford didn't know what they'd implemented.

I think using ACC in a stop / start scenario would be asking for trouble as I often brake with more concern about the car behind than the car in front - because in Sydney, the crappier your car & the worse the tyres, the closer you tailgate the car in front. . So I often brake a lot less than I should to give the guy behind maximum stopping distance. I don't think ACC would allow for that.

the ACC is awesome. I tested it and let it brake to a stop for me

it gets to a walking pace, then tells you to apply the brake.

    the rest it does automatically

Went by the dealer today and was told any car ordered today would be a June build irrespective of what options you wanted. Would that make it a MY15 car?

Have been told the same. Rather capture any MY 15 changes than have a May build and miss out. Bottom line is any cars ordered around now will probably not be here before late August at the earliest and that could push out a fair bit.

I don't think they'll push out. It appears that the strategy is to get the build list & do the AU spec vehicles in a batch.

Latest over at Briskoda is that suddenly people are having their delivery dates brought forward.

I'd say start of MY15 is also when they're upping the ratio between RS and normal Octavia production (jumping from 7% to 9%) as mentioned in that article a week or two ago. Like the others I'm happy to wait a month or two longer for a MY15. I actually noticed the low-frequency 'booming' in the pre-production Liftback RS I test drove, looks like it'll be fixed by the time mine arrives.
