The pressure thing is caused by an ill-fitting rear hatch/tailgate, those that were afflicted got some relief by releasing the hatch so it was on the 'first catch'. When I tried it accidentally, (knew it was loose but was only going a short distance) I hit a bump there was visible movement of the rear hatch and I felt as though my head exploded from the compression.
The rumbling is different and is the thin but high tensile steel boot floor that is very resonant and easily stimulated. Mine was only slight and was improved by chocking the spare wheel and actually loosening the plastic securing nut slightly.
Others have had it worse and some have had rear shocks replaced, also reported as a problem in some MQB based Golfs.
With regard to the Wheels magazine issues, since they were complaining about the ride quality of the base Octavia then it would have had the 16 inch steel wheels which should have theoretically have supplied the most compliant ride. Really odd since GTR27 has got something like 18 inch on his and seems happy enough to be contemplating 19 inch.
I've just finished a drive from Brisbane to tin can bay and back (different days) with the car mostly loaded (wife, 2*kids, about 2/3 of the boot full - porta cot, push bike, 2 x small suitcases, large hiking back pack, overnight bag, pram, some bedding and other bits and pieces. ) Returned with all that, plus the mother in law, 2 massive bags of presents, another overnight bag and a bag of food (including a whole ham) so can safely say what it's like 100% loaded.
Ride is good with 18s, slightly under damped fully loaded, but pretty good. Beautifully quiet on smooth bitumen, noticeably louder on coarse stuff (but still acceptable). Have done 600ks on roughly 3/4 of a tank, without trying at all for economy (constantly changing gears/load etc). The car is a fantastic highway vehicle, just a shame our limits are so low, it sits great at 120-130.
I think dynamatting the boot and front doors will make a huge difference to road noise on coarse surface, but continental contact sport 2s are loud tyres on coarse bitumen (I know from previous rs) so changing them would be the easiest way to improve that.
Starting to get used to the clutch now, so can take off normally for the most part now. As an all round family vehicle, it's pretty close to perfect. I think the rs would be closer to perfect (bit more power, bit better ride), but it's also roughly 13-15k more with the options mine has. For the money I paid, the car is crazy good. Much better than the alternatives anyway!
