Do yourself a favour and take an R for a drive. I was firmly determined an RS would be my next car and then I drove the R (also had something to do with the 8 month wait!!!!!)
The r looks awesome, i was impressed by the golf and I'm sure the r will be on another level without doubt. But the r has a smaller rear boot than the golf which would make it an even worse scenario than the gti. It will be the main family car as we have a subaru impreza which is old now, but runs great but for how long? I have my fun road/track mini gp. Gtr27 has a great point and so does damama, my testosterone wants the gti, or r, but my brain says get a family car stupid! But my inner voice then tells me you can make the gti work as a family car....I'm not sure if you guys are following but i think I may have self diagnosed myself with schizophrenia.

biggest differences I found with the gti vs the skoda is the gti doesn't suffer wind noise on the freeway at 100 like the skoda did, and no thumping/booming from bumps and generally much quieter, the steering felt tauter and more direct feel in the sports setting. Really impressed, don't tell anyone I said this, but I loved the steering in the golf better than the 328i m sport.

also so not a big price difference between the skoda and gti both specked to how I want them. Gti came it a t 45k in dsg, driver assist package, white, park assist, everything but leather and sunroof which I didn't want. Vs the skoda rs 42400, pretty close, and there was room on the gti to move, maybe 1k I reckon. They dropped 5-6k straight up with my cooperate deal for work which was nice.

The GTI isnt much bigger than my wife's Jazz (boot or interior room). We are using that as our "family" car while we wait for the octavia to arrive. I sold a WL statesman which we used on long trips/anything that required us to carry stuff. Size wise, the Jazz is ok to take the kids to childcare, and to drive to the train station and thats about it. With a pram in the boot, its a struggle to do shopping. If you want to take the kids to the park (pram + small bike) you cant see out the back due to stacking it all up. You certainly cant take anything else with you. It is really frustrating a lot of the time. If you're going to sell the car before you have kids, then get a GTI and enjoy it. If you are about to have them, or will have them before you change over the car, just buy the RS and save yourself some pain!

I've previously had an RS wagon that was bloody awesome. Just chuck it all in the boot, have room left, and still enjoy GTI like performance. The new model is even better. I dont think anyone could be unhappy with an RS unless they had some very specific requirements, as it literally does everything well.

EDIT: we cant use our big pram (also expensive!) pretty much at all with the jazz. It just doesnt have any room at all left after it's in. So we use like a travel stroller, which the youngest doesnt like, and it sucks to push compared to the good one. Otherwise we couldnt carry anything else.

Just catching up after a weekend away and Stiv's comments about comparing with a BMW reminded me of something...

One of the BMW dealers here in Geneva do special, tax-free rates for UN officials (like me). A friend of mine has just got a new 4-series at a great rate. But here's the extra sweetener... this friend tells me that you can get the special rate even if you're at the end of your term (I finish in May next year), and the dealer will arrange for the car to be built to Australian specifications and delivered to Australia.

So now I'm wondering how close the price of a BMW bought in Geneva will be to my ultimate Skoda? If the BMW comes with seat-warmers, it might seal the deal (at least for my wife - she can't stand the thought of a new Skoda without them).

Damn! I thought my life was easy - order a new Skoda in the new year, have it waiting for me when I return to Australia.

Thanks again for keeping it real. Ok time to go try that skoda again. It will be the sedan hatch, not as much room but defiantly more than the gti. Cheers

The bmw does come with heated seats. Good luck, I always love getting special deals.

If I could do that with VAG, I'd have a 3-door GTI with Discover Pro here so fast

Agree a wagon is infinitely more practical and marginally poorer handling.
My kids are supposed to be keeping me ! All that happens is they get my cars and seem to drink my beer !

Went to the dealers to try another sedan rs today, unfortunately there was only a wagon there. Tried it anyhow. Loved it, no such feeling of nausea this time and ears didn't suffer from equalisation issues. My decision is final, the octavia rs is the car for us, it's just so good at so many things. Now as I still want the sedan, not the hatch. Do I place an order and hope it doesn't make me feel like the other sedan did, or just place the order? Or maybe try one more sedan somewhere to help make a decision. The dealer today did say that he had the issue with 2 other sedans and had the shocks replaced and issue was solved.

Shock replaced at the dealer or he is saying the factory has revised the shock part number on all production? We will have a sedan/hatch in 3 weeks. So I am hoping it has all been resolved in production for MY15.
