So long as you do a highway run or steady at 80km in 4th for 10mins every so often, it will burn off the DPF. If you only ever do stop start and short runs, then petrol may be for you. You know when the DPF is doign a burn as it will rev higher at idle and sit in a higher gear (if auto). The issue is if the car never gets hot. It needs to get up to temp to do a burn.
Yes new DPF is about 5k. There a few places around now that will regen your DPF for about 1k.
Remember that 1000km on a a tank is a 50L tank not 70 or 80.
I get about 7-8L/100 around town (depending how heavy my foot is), and have seen below 5 on long runs. Diesel price doesnt fluctuate, so what you see at the pump is what it always will be. Although it has gone down a few cents over the last few months.
You will need 95-98RON for the petrol, so weigh that up.
They are very different to drive, so that will be a factor too. Although once you fall in love with OIL burners you will never go back.
Oh and with the wagon, I got two full size single bed mattresses in the boot, and closed the lid fully.
