Thanks Jondalar. I am genuinely glad to hear it, as all I've seen and heard previously were failures and complaints.

So, the dreaded Skoda portal. Could you be so kind as to give a brief "how to?" As in what info you need to get onto it (passwords VIN numbers etc) and what downloads can be got. It is not as if Skoda or VAG give you any guidance on this at all - they don't, and usually don't know themselves. It is all one of the proverbial black arts.

I own a 2015 Octavia RS & have always been annoyed by lack of speed camera warnings, traffic info, & map updates in standard nav system. As no doubt most owners are.

I'm sure it's already been done in another thread, but basically all you do is go to the Skoda Update Portal Update portal enter your VIN and then download a huge ~20Gb file, took almost a day for me. You then have to unzip/extract it which takes some time also, copy to a correctly formatted 32GB SD card (car won't recognise larger I believe) and then insert the card in the car and tell it to check for an update. (System, System Setup. Update Software) There is a tutorial video and instructions on the Update Portal site.

    Cheers,
    Karl

Being in the IT/programming business I thought I'd see why it seems to take so long to download for us Australians. It turns out it's not the Skoda server (which appears to be in the US, the IP is owned by Verizon), but the routing from the server down to Australia. I used a server we have in a Microsoft datacentre in Ireland and downloaded the 22GB file in about an hour! Average download speed was around 69Mbit/s (6.92MB/s). At the same time I was downloading it to our office in Melbourne and it's averaging 0.3MB/s.

It seems if you use a Windows PC to go to the update portal you get offered a download manager to run that will manage (and presumably restart/resume) the download. Using a Mac you just get a link to the file. I tried using wget on a Mac but when the connection dropped it wasn't able to resume, so I gave up.

The file I got for my April 2016 build RS is HIGH12_P58_MRM_2016_2017.zip.

Now I just need to get the file from Ireland to Melbourne...and wait for the SD card I ordered from 'Sydney' (more like Hong Kong given estimated delivery is 2 weeks away) to arrive. By then the dealers may well have an update available.

Yeah using our Mac at home was hopeless, it drops the connection and you restart all over again. I used a 64GB card but had to finesse it, nothing to do with the size I think but more the formatting I think from memory.

Yeah I am on gigabit ethernet right on the AARnet backbone and getting 400KB/s download, speedtest.net gives 96.95 Mb/s download speed for my connection...

BTW the November updates are what I am downloading, now says next update available in May.

When I log in to the portal I am getting the same file name "HIGH12_P58_MRM_2016_2017.zip" as the one that I downloaded back in June 2016. I can't see how this is a November 2016 update, even though the site now says the next update of GPS data is in May.

So I took the time to unpack the file to an SD card, inserted into my car and told the GPS to check for an update, after a minute or so it said there was a software update available. Took the usual 40 minutes to install, version still says 2016/17 so not sure if it's the same or not, but you'd think the system would know if the update was new or not...

I will let you know if I notice any differences.

    CHeers,
