MY17 vs MY18 Facelift Octavia RS

Hi All,

We are considering an Octavia RS Wagon (TSI & DSG) for our new family car and thought I might see if the Skoda community has some advice.


I am torn between waiting for a getting a MY17 with the 1.9% + free servicing, vs waiting for a MY18 Facelift.

On the financial side of things, the 1.9% is almost impossible to beat, it certainly works out much cheaper than any of the available finance options if we were to wait for a MY18, that said I really like the idea of the, improved tune, active dampers, and the fact the MY18 will be the current spec etc.


However it seems the dealers know this too! So I’m a bit worried about my bargaining power from that perspective, in most cases the main dealer here in SA has MY17’s advertised with 1.9% + 75,000km service pack at or even a few hundred above the original drive away price! (Maybe I should be looking interstate, as looks like there are far better deals in Victoria)

So the question is… is the Facelift worth the extra cost, and if not, what’s a fair price for a MY17? (I’m thinking $45kDA TSI, DSG, metallic, tech, 1.9%, 5 year warranty & 3 years servicing).

Anyone else in the same predicament? Or has anyone been able to bag a good deal on a MY17 that they would care to share?

I can't answer your question exactly, but as others have suggested before, make sure you do your wheeling & dealing in the next few weeks.

Dealerships will be desperate to move current-stock before end-of-year, to get their manufacturer bonuses..... SOME dealerships may even sell under their cost, or do absolutely unbeatable deals to get rid of stock..... so your haggling and negotiating skills need to be on point to snag an awesome deal.

To answer your question, it all comes down to finance. Can you afford the newer model at sticker price (there will be almost ZERO negotiating power at dealerships on a newly-released model.... especially with existing floor stock of old-models)

Yes, your "wish-list" would be nice..... but consider the following:

* there are plenty of easily-obtainable, proven, cheap tunes or adjustments (JB4 for example) out there for our cars now, for much less money than the price difference between old vs new model (even before haggling)
* there are plenty of people who have improved suspension on current model cars - again likely for much less money than the price difference.
* how long are you planning on keeping the car? Is this a replace-every-4-years purchase, or long-term?
* remember the MY18 is just a facelift, not a "new" model.... so apart from some cosmetics and very very slight changes as you've described, it's not exactly anything dramatically different from the MY17.
* BIGGEST question - can you overlook the hideous new 4-eyes front-end, for the sake of adjustable dampers & slightly better tune?

I can't add to much beyond what David said above, besides the fact that there are so nice add on's for the my18, but you really need to determine whether or not they are worth it for you. New seats in the form of alcantara and diamond stitching, LED headlights, slightly more aggressive front end, larger touch screen. Adaptive dampers is ok, I have been in a few cars where they turn it on and it feels somewhat tighter and firmer...I wouldn't say it is a deal breaker for me.

that finance rate is good, if they have floor stock in something you want I'd probably go with that. The my17 is still an awesome car, my wife and I are so happy with ours. I compare it to every car I drive and so far I haven't found another car that I would buy over it.

I am coming from the vw side of things put the cash down for a new 2017 7.5 alltrack cause diesel,infotainment ect not avalabile on 7 model if i wanted petrol instead of diesel and bad sound vs dynaudio, analog over digital drivers screen, 6 inch screen infotainment over 9 inch i could have saved 12k on road

So you have to ask yourself how bad do you want the upgrades? are you willing to pay the extra? Is there anything in the new model that is a OMG moment that you just have to have.The deal you are quoting is vry good indeed and unless you were dead set on the newest/latest and greatest i would grab a bargin

Let your dealer know you will look interstate for a better deal if he is not willing to match/beat prices
But for new model i crunched dealer and got 1k+tinted windows off quoted price so the my18 will def cost you more

I was in your shoes and decided to wait out for the MY18 instead which is expected to land sometime in Aug/Sep. Found a rare fully-optioned (18" Black Pack + Tech + Comfort + Sunroof + Auto Boot) MY17 Steel Grey DSG wagon at $48k DA with 5yrs service pack included - almost took the plunge but the MY18's addition of adaptive dampers and blind spot monitoring itself got me sold. Having said that, the low finance rate is definitely attractive which partly got me to look at the MY17 in the first place, and the same promotional rates may not ever happen again (was 1.20% in end 2015 and 1.80% in end 2016)

I reckon the final DA price difference itself is about $5k between the two (after discounts, without factoring difference after finance) and like what some had said above - you gotta judge yourself whether is that worthwhile for the wait, additional specs and perhaps looks?

My circumstances is probably slightly different as I don't actually need a new car right now hence I am happy to wait it out, even up till Q1 2018 which by hopefully have some nice deals going on for the MY18.

P/S: Mine had the MY17 finance quoted at 2.50% (as per what was advertised all over) - not sure how yours managed a 1.90%? Perhaps in-house instead of under Skoda Finance?

Thanks everyone, that is very helpful advice.

I'd say i'm 95% sure we will go with a MY17. We've got one for an overnight test drive tonight, so that's been nice getting to have a bit better look and drive of it, the kids love it, so that's a good selling point too. I don't mind the front end of the face lift, and the other features are nice, but I like the MY17 just as much.

The demo car we have got is optioned with black pack only, so its a good point of comparison to the fully optioned one I have tested in the past.

I think the spec we will look at is Black Pack, Tech Pack & Tailgate, however I think in Reality Black Pack is the only non-negotiable.

I think the big decision now will be to target one with a few options, or see how cheap we can get one with black pack only, I would think the dealer would be more interested in moving one without options than one with, I might be wrong there however.

Yeah the finance comparison rate is 2.5%,it is the actual interest rate is 1.9%.. regardless it is very good, especially when combined with the GFV.

Anyway I guess we will see what the dealer has to say tomorrow when we go back!

The dealer may not have access to any stock that you want. He will be most interested in moving the car he lent you.. that's why he did it. Not sure if stock swap is available.

Most RS cars imported have the 18 inch black pack fitted. It's standard on the MY18. Be careful not to mistaken take a car with the 19inch black pack

The option packs in the MY18 have gone up in price and you need to get both ($5100) to get active chassis control and BSM.

Are you looking at Solitaire? They seem to have a few base spec wagons judging by their website (blue white and red)

Yeah Solitaire, they have said that stock swap is an option as is buying in from the cars held in pre-delivery by Skoda, they have access to about 60 cars in total, and have a number in stock (a few more than shown on Carsales or their website, with better spec).

The one that we have had overnight is tempting, unfortunately my wife is no so keen on white, but regardless we will be looking the stock they have in the first instance for the best deal.

I was pretty sure the adjustable dampers came in from around May/June last year, mine was built in Jan 16, but a short while later lane assist cameras appeared in the rear view mirror (facing outwarsd) and then a bit later one the adjustable shocks came in for MY17 so not sure why that is being mentioned. Any MY17 had them I thought with the tech pack.

Hey Woofy,
No DCC/Active Dampers never came, I rang Skoda Aus HQ and they said new Facelift will have them.
The 1 thing I wish my RS230 had! You can get that optioned in UK/NZ so was !@#$ed off.

New ones should have DCC/Active dampers as an option.
