I reckon if you use poor quality oils in any turbo engine then carbon and oil build up will be the least of your problems.

Would not have thought it would be necessary until about 30k or 2 year service.

I would be surprised if the low end engines like ours will ever receive two injectors per cylinder like the 2 litre does. Not sure about the 1.8 litre though, I thought I read somewhere that it does.

From my reading on the carbon build up subject, most of the problems seem to be associated with the EGR (pcv valving) system and lots of short cold journeys do not help.
Doing anything not in the book could compromise warranty. That's where we toss a coin and decide if we take a chance. Getting VWA to warrant carbon build-up would be near impossible.

I'd like to thank you for the reminder. I fitted a Forge Catch Can to mine (possibly in October or November last year around the same time as the interim service but I didn't make note of the date). I checked it every couple of weeks and it didn't seem to be doing a thing and forgot about it & haven't checked it this year.

I just had a look (5000-7000km travelled) and the catch can was well over the max mark. I filled a 500ml jar with horrid brown water-like garbage and foamy scum.

My oil level is only down 3mm from the top of the cross-hatch.

I can imagine this goop going into the inlet, the water evaporating off and the remainder coating the valves.

80% of my journeys are 40km+. The engine gets nice warmed up nicely. BTW, EGR isn't tied into the PCV (as far as I can see).

Edit: Just found it - fitted 24/10/14 at 143500km. Now at 149500 = 6000km travelled

It's that film that sits in your intake, gets heat-cycled then turns to sludge, gets more heat, then eventually bakes on.

I figured that but am somewhat lacking articulation skills today. Thanks for the better explanation.

    Charming looking stuff

The 1.4 definitely does not have two sets of injectors. The upper engine cleaner is to stop carbon building up, rather than trying to treat it after its happened. Once warranty is up, I'll fit a catch can and see what else I can do in a proactive way.

You could just leave the car, and pay the 5-700 for walnut blasting after 80k or so if you want.

AFAIK only the MK3 TSI engines have 8 injectors. My (MK2 Octy RS) TSI has only 4.

Looking at that jar, I think ill be installing a catch can also, cant hurt even if you never need it!

That's how I figured it. I had 2 people that told me they did nothing but I got a proper kit for about half the new price. Couldn't go too wrong with that.

Did I ever post the borescope videos of my #2 & #3 inlets before & after chemical cleaning?

No. There seems to be lots of debate about it though. My experience was with an extremely carboned bike. When I started it after treatment, it blew almost a cup of carbon out the exhaust. It was really bad beforehand though

That's true. I think one of them has a remap & nothing else. The other has no mods & constantly worries about inlet carbon build-up.

Cheapy $20 borescope videos of Inlets 2 & 3 before & after a chemical clean.

    Cyl 2 before & after

    Cyl 3 before & after
