L series are motor bikes etc Cars are M series

18.5. SPEEDOMETERS AND ODOMETERS (ALL VEHICLES)

18.5.1. Speedometers

18.5.1.1. Unless otherwise ‘Approved’, every vehicle must be fitted with a speedometer which must:

18.5.1.1.1. indicate vehicle speed only in kilometres per hour; and

18.5.1.1.2. indicate the actual vehicle speed, for all speeds above 40 km/h, to an accuracy of ± 10 per cent.

18.5.1.2. The speedometer must be installed so that its indication is readily visible to the driver when seated in the normal driving position.

18.5.2. Odometers

18.5.2.1. Every vehicle other than LA, LB and LEM group vehicles must be fitted with an odometer which must:

18.5.2.1.1. indicate distance travelled in one kilometre units (or less) at least from 1 to 600,000 kilometres (for MA, MB and MC category vehicles) and from 1 to 999,999 kilometres for all other category vehicles; and

18.5.2.1.2. indicate the actual distance travelled by the vehicle to an accuracy of ± 4 per cent.

18.5.2.2. Every vehicle of category LC, LD and LEM must be fitted with an odometer which must:

18.5.2.2.1. indicate distance travelled in one kilometre units from 1 to 99,999 kilometres; and

18.5.2.2.2. indicate the actual distance travelled by the vehicle to an accuracy of ± 4 per cent.

edit: That ADR is from 2006? The RACQ thing says "from 2007". Would that be pertinant?

I think your right though - I haven't heard of a motor car without an odometer.

My current mk3 over-reads 4kph over at 60 and 8kph at 110.
My old mk2 over-read by 6kph at 60 and 10kph at 110.
Odometers for both within 1% with new tyres. 15inch on the mk2 and 17inch on the mk3.

Worst car was a Hyundai Santa Fe mk1 which needed 124kph on the dial for 110 and the odo was 6% out. Which meant the already abysmal fuel consumption was even worse than initial estimates.

My mk2 VRS was out by 3ks at 100km/h, 4ks out at 110km. Always seemed weird setting the cruise to 115km/h on the freeway knowing you were still sitting on the limit. Ok-Ok - I might have usually set it to 120 knowing its unlikely I'd be pulled over in NSW for being 5 over

The vRs has the smallest speedo error because it has the biggest diameter tyre (225/40r1. 637mm
The 225/45r17 option is 0.4% smaller diameter. 634mm
The 205/55r16 is 0.8% smaller 631mm

It doesn't sound like much but it makes a km or 2 difference between each size

Speaking of Odometers, I've never had one correlate with those 5km road markets used to check your odometer. I always seem to run 100m to 200m past the last marker before 5km is added.

when my speedo was 10% over and I had 205/55r16 I'd be at 5.3km at the 5km mark. Nice for Skoda service as it meant the 15k service was happening at 14,200km. It doesn't sound like much but it means the services come up a couple of weeks early. By the time you get to 150,000km you're half a service in front.

With the 225/50r17 at the 5km mark I'm at 4.8km so I've offset the inaccuracy.

I'm about to go to 225/40r18 - they'll be pretty close with the odo.

Going to 225/40r18 will make my odo more accurate but stuff up my speedo. Hopefully I'll be able to adjust it with VCDS.

I was aiming to go with 235/45r17 this tyre change but some 2nd hand 18" wheels & tyres came up at the right price so i thought I'd give them a try - I've had every other size.
