Skoda has been a major industrial manufacturer in Eastern Europe for a century or so I think it was. They make a LOT of trams.
Today's trivia quiz is:
How do the Czech's pronounce Skoda? Do they do something funny with that initial S with the little v on top of it?
Is the O pronounced as an 'oh' or more of an 'err'. I suspect we all pronounce it to rhyme with Soda. Maybe it's shkerrdah.
All opinions with any authority welcome.
Then we'll move on to whether we should pronounce it that way, as the 'native's call it. It could join "Porsha", "Folksvargen" and, you'll have to squint a bit, "Sit'rer'n" etc.
Third item is what Skoda means. I've just tried Google Translate and I get "Damage" as the translation, and that's with the funny S included. Somehow I doubt it. It's not letting me use that S as a capital, so now I'm really confused, which explains me in Budapest a couple of years ago.

I believe it's pronounced Schkoda.. with the middle rhyming with mod/cod rather than the more common oh/soda sound we hear here.
I've got Czech heritage and that's how they pronounced it long before the brand reappeared here.

The š is pronounced like a sh noise. In Croatian škoda is translated in to Šofer Kvari Ovaj Dobar Auto - literal translation is the chauffeur ruins this good car lol lame I know![]()
... brought to you by Wikipedia.
The Š in Škoda can be pronounced "sh", as in, "she".
"koda" can be pronounced "codder".
The diacritic above the S is called a caron.
Not unless you are talking to someone who understands Czechoslovakian. Otherwise, just pronounce it as you would in English.
Before making automobiles, Škoda was an arms manufacturer which bore the name of its founder, Emil Škoda.

A bit of Skoda history.
Skoda is almost 40 years older than VW and worth of mentioning that the Beetle has the Czech origin as it was stallen design, both, body and the engine.
Another less known manufacturer from the same country with even longer history;

It does sound tragic when some aussie salesman tries calling it "sschodder" etc...
I guess it is like the name John. In some countries it is Juan, but we still call him John here in australia.
I think we pronounce it as it is the custom in the local area....??

Skoda is one of the reasons Hitler invaded CZ. Their tanks were far superior to the German ones & Hitler wanted the factory & the CZ army's fleet of tanks.
