    DSG Repair Costs - Perspective

    Seems like many people are very concerned about DSG repair costs ($2.5K~$3.5k)
    I have been trying to get this into perspective in case it happens to my Octavia

    A work mate has just had the auto in his Ford Falcon (150k on the clock) reconditioned, $2,200
    If my flat screen TV died I would simply buy another one, $3,450

    6 Months ago my wife used the Mazda to mow down a bolder
    $350 to repair the bent alloy wheel, $200 to replace the tyre
    I drove the Mazda this week, first time in ages, it felt terrible
    I was guessing they did not balance the replacement tyre, so I took it to the tyre shop
    But as it turns out, the impact had wacked the alignment out heaps,
    it put a funny diagonal wear over the tyres - they are wasted
    At the last service, Mazda rotated the tyres, so the rears (now on the front) also got nailed
    So today I had to fork out for 4 new tyres and a wheel alignment, $670
    Making the total cost of this "incident" $1,220

    The Mazda is also due for rego next week,
    so today I've also paid $545 CTP, $560 Comp, $329 Rego
    Making today's total outgoings on a (bloody) Mazda $2,654

    I love my DSG gearbox, it will piss me off if it fails early,
    but I'll just suck it up cos it's just like any other large expense we get hit with from time to time

    (If anybody is wrecking a late model Octavia TSI let me know )

    An observation I've made from browsing various forums, is that the automatic transmission (whatever the configuration) almost always requires a rebuild much, much earlier than the engine does.

    EDIT: If you plan to keep the car for a significant amount of time and wish to avoid excessive repair costs, a manual gearbox would be more suitable.

    Valid perspective.. it's one reason why I'll be holding my mk6 for some time yet post-warranty. I figured if it happens, it happens.. it's still a heap cheaper than the hit I would take changing the car over, and like you I do love the gearbox regardless.

    My MKV R32 DSG required a full rebuild at 40,000km. (Luckily under extended allianz warranty) the VW service manager showed me the bill that allianz got..........wait for it.................$18,000!

    I drive a manual now.

    My 7speed dry clutch DSG mechatronic unit in February this year was $4850 + GST and 5.5 hours labour to fit, At 110,000 ks and out of warranty, VW goodwill paid for it. Not so cheap?

    Spent $1900 on 2 year extended warranty before any confirmation of extended DSG warranty in Australia and good-will repairs. I'll probably upgrade to a MK7 before it runs out.

    Must be an MCG sized TV for that money these days.
    About 5 years or so ago it cost me $3000+ for a replacement auto Land Rover gearbox which was actually manufactured by Jatco the people who many many if not most Nissan, Renault and Mazda auto boxes.. Any serious work on any auto gearbox in 2013 is going to cost in the thousands of dollars range.
