my downpipe is 3" and has an outlet of 2.25" to match the stock exhaust, but right at the end of the downpipe.

mine is 3" all the way because i got the full apr exhaust ...... downpipe + catback.

I got a quote today for the job. He couldn't believe how cheap the downpipe was shipped on ebay, but gave me a scare about the really good quality LOOKING brushed cats that are actually very thin with small 'bricks' inside.

So he quoted me $500 for a custom made downpipe with a cat included (@ $175). If I wanted to get the bits in myself and get him to weld it up and then ill install it all, it would only save me $50 with him.... although another crowd quoted and it would have been another hundred less.

Now a funny thing he noticed (37 years experience) was that the right side of the muffler tip is actually blocked off! Go check your own stock exhausts if you have them still! Everyone on here says the downpipe is the only restriction but I wonder now, is it? Cant fork out for a cat-back

it probably has a valve in the muffler that opens the 2nd tip when pressure builds up

its fairly common to do this to keep a car quiet at low RPM

LOL with 37 yrs experience you would think he has come across a valved exhaust (or at the very least heard of them) or two in his time - they are quite common these days. Even my parents old 93 model Mazda 929 had a valved exhaust which only opened the 2nd exhaust tip when needed.

if that was the case, then only one of the two tips would b covered in exhaust soot.
it certainly wasn't the case when i had my stock exhaust.

as zei20t and Lucas_R have already mentioned - not uncommon these days.

Your on the money there. Both are covered equally. But I'd have expected the right one to be a little less black. Maybe I drive to hard :p

Looking down the pipe looks like an a$$hole, ahem, star kinda shape, valve it could be. Ill give it a poke later LOL

    Downpipe compatability (TSI)

The valve opens and closes much more than i think you realise. A fellow forum member filmed his Golf R exhaust a while back: http://youtu.be/Ac-57_RW1f8

Im tossing up between a downpipe and a chip - I know the chip will give more power, but im looking for a touch more sound...

Does anyone know the performance gain in just a downpipe...? Im sorta thinking its around 10kw and 20nm...??
