Mine does so does our Audi. I assumed all VW products do.
It's not a gimmick IMO. If I try to start my car before the needles reset it basically won't. The reset I think allows all the computer systems to boot.
OK, so once again, sorry if I sound stupid, but I have only had experience with VW's.
I know that only the Golf R and the Scirocco R have the dash needles dance back and forth on start-up. (GTI's dont)
I was very pleasantly suprised to see that my 147 RS does it too!!!
I know its just a gimmick, but is a great one at that! It is like the adrenaline starter to build anticipation before starting off on that drive!

I don't remember our RS doing it, it's been a while since I drove it, or maybe I'm just used to it. It could be a MY09 thing though.
guess wat i was meant to say is "the mk6 gti doesn't do it by default, but it can b activated by VCDS."
woofy - urs should "sweep" too. i'm pretty sure it's a facelift feature. the pre-fl don't (can't activate even with vcds) do this. the entire speedo cluster is different.

Cars built from November 2009 can do this. Mine was delivered Sep 09 so not possible for me.
Just passing on what I was once told, worth a try if you've got access to VCDS
