I doubt the T1-Rs are going to be as good as what comes on the car stock....those tend to wear really fast. If you are just talking about replacing the stock tyres, you'd be hard pressed to find much better. If its for other wheels the Michelin PS3s are where its at. The Toyos always end up disappointing for everyone. Those are pretty old model tyres, I remember them replacing the T1-S about 6 yrs ago.
they similar or better than ContiSportContact 3's ???

Quite an old pattern & the break-away point tends to vary a lot (and it's quite sudden).
Toyo R1R get some good reports if you must get toyo.
CSC3 are a better tyre but lots more expensive
have a look at tirerack. continental extreme contact DW are USD200 each. Sumitomo HTRZIII are even cheaper (someone here had them on their RS IIRC - or maybe it was an R36?) fresh Goodyear F1A are USD225 (there are cheap 2007 prdn as well - stay away); Michelin PSS are USD251 which might sneak in under the $1k limit
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic
I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
I have the Continental Extreme Contact DW and they have been great! I have been more impresssed with them then the contact sport 2s

thanks gents
I did a little reading round and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's seem to be getting rave reviews for being awesome at almost everything ... not yet listed on tirerack, wonder what the pricing is here ..
The only thing that lets them down is noise, but it seems that noise tends to be a necessary by-product of excellent handling (which is my main priority). Apparently they're also light which would definitely be a bonus. Another thing is that they're XL and I think I read someone here say that XL's will not provide the specified load rating unless inflated to a specific pressure.
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 | Tyre Test 2011 | Auto Express
sizes I think will fit 18x8.5:
225/40R18 92Y XL
235/40R18 95Y XL
going by http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp I dunno if the 225/40 will fit an 8.5" rim or not
Rim width--Min tyre width-Ideal tyre width-Max tyre width
7.0 inches--195 mm--------205 or 215 mm--225 mm
7.5 inches--205 mm--------215 or 225 mm--235 mm
8.0 inches--215 mm--------225 or 235 mm--245 mm
8.5 inches--225 mm--------235 or 245 mm--255 mm
9,0 inches--235 mm--------245 or 255 mm--265 mm
above table says that it might(?) be possible.
.. and the 235/40 is going to be a little taller - is it extra height or extra width that tends to make Octy's rub???

That's correct my friend. Hence why some people go against the tyre placard and go for 225 width tyres even if it means it doesn't meet the load ratings. Will definately rub once lowered especially with 8.5 inch width wheels. Mine are 8 inch wide wheels with the correct 235 width and rubs only very occasionally when flying though a corner or straight and hitting a decent bump like the time we went down reefton and black spur. Otherwise in city driving, it doesn't rub at all. But 8.5 inch width would rub more if wheels are ET45 offset of less. If you can get wheels with an ET/offset above 45, then you may just get away with minimal rubbing even with 8.5 inch width. This wheel offset calculator will give you a much better idea of relevant clearances to help you make up your mind whilst minimising the guess work.
