I have heard repeated warnings from different mechanics about the 'dangers' of using non-branded fuels in a car.
I assume the big multinational companies such as BP, Caltex, Shell, are the branded fuel suppliers and they do not sell E10 or E85 fuels in South Australia.
The independent "United petroleum" chain do sell ethanol supplemented fuels as well as non-ethanol type but does anyone know whether there is some validity to these claims of suspect fuel quality?
What might be interesting is that as per the article the base fuel in Europe is 95 octane but I think that many countries there it is mandatory to include at least 10% Ethanol (that was just from the Briskoda forum so that might need to be confirmed from a better source)

I use United every now & then (depends where I'm working). There's nothing wrong with it and they have a good turnover.

There are a few other small independents I occasionally use and the car always seems to run a fraction better.

I mainly use Caltex fuels because I can buy the gift cards for 5% discount and the local Caltex is usually very cheap & has a busy forecourt.

I always use 98 fuel, and most often from the same new BP station.
When I reset the trip meter after filling up, the "expected range" is always 770 kms...

BUT I had to fill up on 91 a few weeks ago (long story), and the for the next few tanks, the trip meter showed only 660kms as expected range!

So, I don't know if the fuel had anything to do with that??

I don't know if it is but logically the expected range would be based on the long-term fuel consumption reading. Could that have reset at around that time?
Oh, and how did it run on the 91 Octane?

i think it uses a combination of the long term + the current trip with a weighting to the current trip figures. I know my DTE doesn't change from when I leave home (cold start / high consumption / suburban driving) to when I arrive at work (40km of motorway / constant 100kph). When I start up in the afternoon the DTE drops almost instantaneously and stays the same for the whole trip.

The best I've ever seen on mine is 900km but generally it's 860 on a fill after a motorway run.

Out of interest what sort of k's from a tank/refill amount are vRS owners getting? I'm still <1k into the new car, being relatively varied in driving and long term av is 9.2/100 and dropping. It's running 98 though the fill flap shows 95 (ill continue with 9.

I have as well as I liked their Vortex 98 and when we got our RS, Caltex were the only non Shell company you could reliably get 98.

I kept on using them with our diesel Santa Fe as they also had the premium Vortex diesel at the same site but at my recent service they noticed a diesel knock so said try putting someones elses in. I had been noticing it for a few months as well, if not longer, so put Shell in the last two times and it has definitely run better. Makes me now wonder why the premium diesel was causing that, usually higher octane petrol runs better so not sure what that diesel has in it to cause this. It is a very old site so could well be something else amiss in that diesel tank.

Premium diesel fuels do not have a higher Cetane rating than regular diesel, you are paying extra for the cleaning agents that they add. http://www.caltex.com.au/FPL%20PDS/V...m%20Diesel.pdf

Yeah it was the cleaning agents I was using it for, but you would think it wouldn't cause pinging. Having said that I'm yet to be able to tell when exactly the pinging is happening as I don't see any difference. And never noticed anything particularly odd.

With my Pajero I've always noticed that it was a lot more "rattly" on Vortex diesel whereas Shell diesel made it sound much smoother and also gets better economy. Been using Costco for a while now and it works well.
