The manual says,
"The warning light comes on after the ignition has been switched on.
If the warning light does not go out after starting the engine or it lights up when driving,
a fault exists in an exhaust relevant component. The engine management system
selects an emergency programme which enables you to drive to the nearest specialist
garage by adopting a gentle style of driving"
Does anybody know what that means in English?
Mine came on this morning. May car is booked in for it's 60k service on Friday and has now done 60,200km so I initially assumed it was just another reminder from VW until I read the manual. I'm not sure what the emergency program the management system has selected is the car drives exactly the same as normal at the moment.
BTW. Before people get excited this is not the diesel particle filter light per se. That light did not come on an has never come on on my car but maybe it's somehow related.

I understand that it's not the DPF warning etc., but from what I recall of the sequence of events with mine (well, it was a 2.5 years ago) was DPF warning, then the one you've got then it went it limp home mode soon after.
I'd be either getting it to the dealer sonner than friday or trying not to use it until then.

Thanks. I have never had a DPF light and I suspect that with my driving conditions I'm extremely unlikely to ever see one so it's a little strange. I was hoping that somebody might even be able to explain what triggers the light whether it's a specific sensor or just a combination of readings within the cars computer.
I've done about 120 km since the light came on and the car is running perfectly, I'll probably clock up another 120 km before it hits the service centre on Friday morning so we will see what the diagnostic computer has to say.

It could be the EGT (exhaust gas temperature sensor) or DPF sensor or something else. Eventually it will go into the limp mode, if the ECU wouldn't be able to do active regeneration, and if any of the sensors is faulty it won't be. The ECU regenerates the DPF every 1000km approx. so it depends how many km ago it regenerated last.

Office, city, back, home. 112 km today and still running perfectly normally except the light on the dash. Thirty or so km to the workshop tomorrow morning.
The only possible thing is that it may be taking a fraction longer than normal in the morning to get to operating temp but that could be just traffic conditions related and the light is to do with the exhaust rather than the engine (yes I have checked the oil and coolant levels).

The sensor fault (or wiring) could be intermittent fault, in which, the sensor and the wiring should be properly tested. It could go from the intermittent to faulty at any time, but also several months later. Keeping the coppy of the dealers detailed invoice, what they did and what they found, could be money saver, if it fails just outside of the warranty.

Any update on this Kiwi (or others)? My wife's Tiggy has just incurred this exhaust warning light coming on. Unfortunately she had to drive it back from Noosa to Brisbane with the warning light on today. It's booked into VW Austral on Wed to get looked at, but I'm scared of what I've read of them and this warning light on the Tiguan (and other) forums. Also don't wish to have this as a license to print money from VW Austral either.
Would love to take it to Jmac as I know he'll do a great job at sorting it out, but unfortunately it's too convenient at VW Austral as it's just around the corner from Mrs Donweather's work.
BTW, her Tiggy is the TSI.
