They discuss the petrol engine because that is the car they were given to drive & comment on. He says/she says is a small format article so they have to focus on the vehicle in hand & keep the variables out of it.

Sorry but I totally disagree with you there.
The review is of a 118TSI vehicle not the entire range. The diesel option does get a mention but only in passing which is the correct thing to do when reviewing a specific vehicle. It is not a technical review its designed in a conversational piece and I think that in that respect it is correctly weighted and reflects the sort of conversation a couple are likely to have.
Overall for what it is I think it's well written and accurate.

Every review I read of Skoda, in the Fairfax press at least, raises the issue of resale. It would be interesting/useful to get some real world stats on that one, seeing Redbook etc suggests good resale.

And something to watch out for - nice little piece in the latest (UK) issue of evo, where they've fitted trackday tyres to their 118Tsi Yeti and taken it 3 up around the Neurburgring (sorry for the eu, but I can't find the umlaut atm)

    I forgot.

    They love this one too.
They give high praise to the fuel economy
it's more frugal than many a large car on the Australian market.
    but then bemoan
The only blight I can see is a thirst for more expensive premium unleaded fuel
My God, it's a $45k vehicle. Even if you drive 24/7 in the city & only get 10L/100 it will still only cost the average driver ~$3k a year in PULP98 - total. Another $400 a year extra - big deal.

Same here. I went there to enquire about a Scout which they didn't have any of, but I made it clear that it was only a Scout that I was looking to buy. They didn't/couldn't arrange for a test drive although I requested one. However, they have been quick to respond to all my questions. I had done a reasonable amount of looking around so felt comfortable with their answers - I even emailed Skoda HO to find out whether the Scout DSG would come with the same "off road" system that the Yeti and Tiguan have. Their reply was in line with Nepean's reply i.e. no off road system but uses a haldex clutch in the drive train. So at least Nepean Skoda dealers have done some homework. The upshot is that I have ordered the car - the downside is the wait - originally early May but now in build status with no eta. Oh weel, good things come to those who wait . . . apparently.

I bought my car from Southern Classic Cars in Wollongong. I was offered and took advantage of having a car for a three day loan period during which I did quite a few K's. The salesman said to me as I drove out the gate for the loan period that I would buy it and he was right, the car sold itself over that period. My only regret is I did not try and buy the wagon on the stand at the Sydney motor show, that was a beautiful car.

It's called the puppy dog sell. Take a cute puppy dog home to the kids for the night then tell them next day they can't have it. It's a very effective selling technique when used correctly.

I think it also shows you stand by your product. Extended time with the car can show up problems you wouldn't see in a 20 minute test drive...

Mind you, if you are coming from a car with a lot of clicks on it, most new cars are going to seem a big step up.

Which is the very reason I said, "It's a very effective selling technique when used correctly. "
