    Cars Guide Scout review

    Published 16 November 2011 - link here

"Think Forester before it morphed into just another high riding SUV and you've got the Skoda Scout. That's not doing the Scout an injustice because as a small wagon with some off road ability it is a very practical and appealing vehicle."

Did they mean to say Forester or the Outback?

neither are a direct swap IMO.
GenV Outback is half a size bigger than Octavia; old Forester was half a size smaller; current Forester half a size taller

Gen IV Outback is probably the closest to an Octavia Scout, except I think the Scout has a bit more interior space - I think it comes down to how the space is utilised. One of the cars we are looking at to replace an Accord looks smaller from the outside, yet has more space front and rear and more boot space.

Newer Subarus are also half a size uglier, and other factors where it lacks behind. What was a great company seems to have many ex-Subaru drivers heading to VAG overall.

My Scout replaced a GenIV Outback. The interior space is pretty comparable (back seat width in the Scout more useable with child seats, bigger boot), although the Outback is longer - transverse engine and more upright seating in the Scout make the length difference. Height is similar and ground clearance is 180mm (Scout) v 200mm (Outback).

The Gen V Outback has almost 10cm more rear legroom than the Scout, and the rear seat is shaped better than the Gen IV. It's been made taller (220mm ground clearance and increased body height) and wider (with wider track) to compete visually with the Mazda CX7 etc. After half hiding the ugly stick for the GenIV, Subaru brought it out with a vengeance for the slabby GenV. The Scout still has a bigger boot than the Subaru, although does weight more, which is easily felt on the road.

If you see a current model Subaru in the USA in context with all the other vehicles there they don't look out of place or unusual. Until Australia has the market buying power of the USA vehicles will tend to be designed for the USA market so get over it and stop bitching about things that you have no control over. You have voted with your cash so get on with life without the regrets many of you seem to have.

no regrets from me K1W1. I prefer the Scout, hands down - I was just commenting on some of the details. Subaru no longer meets my needs or wants and, quite frankly, I would have gone to a Scout after in 2004 after my golf IV if it had been available.
