You have a manual handbrake, not an electronic one like in the golf

Fair point, but the car can brake itself automatically with the ACC, and emergency brake, and the hill hold, so it doesn't seem like it shouldn't be able to do this.

From the European Octavia A7 MY16 manual:

Vehicles with an automatic transmission can decelerate to a standstill and
start moving again using the ACC.
    Decelerate to a standstill
If a vehicle ahead decelerates to a standstill, the ACC will also decelerate your
    vehicle to a standstill.
Starting to drive again after a holding period
As soon as the vehicle ahead starts moving again after a holding period, your
vehicle will also move and the speed will continue to be regulated. Control is
automatically disconnected in case of longer holding periods.
    Depress the brake pedal.

I've seen that the latest Audi A4 has a "traffic mode" where it will stop and hold as long as necessary, this may also be available on the Superb, but I think we have to wait a bit longer for it to be available on the Octavia.

Hill hold uses the ABS pump, only works for approx 3 seconds. After that it needs the electronic motors otherwise the abs pump will overheat.

What on earth do drivers do in traffic now days if you don't use the accelerator or brake pedal? Just point the steering wheel or see how long you can drive with your knees. No wonder everyone is on their phones texting etc.
I wonder if 'technology' like this will increase the incidence of dvt's due to drivers not moving at all and stittng in traffic for hours on end?

Interesting... Didn't know that and fits with the relatively short delay that it stops you for before bringing up the "Apply Brake" message.

I think that the Auto Cruise has worn out my brakes and calipers quicker than normal as I tend to push the car sometimes when auto braking occurs and not needed rather than pulling the cruise stalk forward to de-activate it! Or I could have just worn my tires and brakes out quicker due to my driving? Probably the latter as why would you try to override the cruise. Doesnt make sense to have it on and then try and do something different.

Try driving like you own it Not like you stole it.

I got a big red pic in the maxidot today with proximity lines all around the car in normal traffic. ACC wasn't on but I'm wondering if it thought I was about to be hit from behind? I had to pull up quick which was fine, I wasn't that close to the car in front, but did notice while wondering what the hell that was that the little car behind me was very close.

Big red lines back or front mean that the parking sensors have picked up something less than about 500mm away from your car. Its supposed to be 300mm but mine go red at approx 500mm.
