    Build date of engine?

Is there a way to work out the heritage (what its from and the build date) of an engine from an engine number?

    Thanks in advance.

    OK,

Can anyone tell me if the later model RS's came with an engine number starting with RR?

I know most have a CCZ prefix, but I have been told that the later models have an RR prefix... Not sure if this is true?

There will be a sticker on engine block, it's a pretty basic one so I don't know how it'll be after a couple of years. You can also get it via VCDS. Heres one I happened to take from my old Polo

    Thanks -

For context I'm getting a new engine - the new engine number starts with RR.

The one that its replacing has an engine number starting with CCZ.

The dealer assures me that its the right engine, but I'm being cautious (perhaps overly) and want to double check that RR is the correct prefix.

Can't just tell us that and leave it hanging, what the hell happened to the original engine?

On a similar note, I have a vague recollection that finding the stamped engine number is a small nightmare....is that true? We may be selling our RS to family either in NSW or in QLD and from memory when I last did that they have to sight the engine number stamp itself.

There is not much to tell. Our 09 model car with ~40,000K on the clock failed to start one morning. Turns out it had "dropped" a valve. I'm not sure how or why etc, other than its broken and the dealer recommended a new engine. Luckily there was a new engine in Syd so we don't have to wait months for one to be shipped from CZ.

The new engine has an RR prefix. I have not seen the number, but the dealer has given it to me so I can make a start on filling out the paperwork.

The department of transport apparently need to see the number so I guess I'll find out just how much fun that is in the near future!

I had a very quick search and could not find a "RR" prefix. The closest I coud find was R4 16v TSI/TFSI EA888. xttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_petrol_engines

Also have a look here: xttp://www.volkswagenspares.com/page.php?page=vwengines

    Cheers Fred

    Update:

This is a UK site but is seems the R defines the model type (I might be wrong, just a guess).

    Thanks Fred,

I reached out to Guy Harding APR/Harding Performance on the thought that he knows more about VAG engines than anyone. He confirmed that the 3 letter prefix is normal but suggested that all replacement engines have a different prefix to show that they are "factory" rebuilt - This might be where the RR comes in?

He also said that its not possible for the dealer to install an incorrect spec so that assuages my concerns.

    Thanks all.

I was going to say that RR probably is code for refurb. Rough run though with a dead engine at such a young age and low kms. What's it going to end up costing?
