    Brake wear

Hi guys! I had the brake wear light come on so I changed the pads. Standard oem brakes, lasting 50+k. Not bad. The pads themselves have about 3mm of meat left but more concerning is the huge lip on the outside! It's about 1.5 to 2mm high. On both sides! Has anyone else experienced this?

Looks like I'm up for new rotors as well as pads! Will try to grab a pic.

Seems it is not unusual on Euro vehicles these days.
The pads and the rotors are both considered sacrificial and both often have to be replaced at the same time.

When I asked an independent mechanic whether the disks could be machined like my son's Subaru Outback's had been he just laughed and said there was insufficient metal on VAG disks.

I replaced my pads at 55,000km and had the disks machined no issues. Car now has low dust pads and has done another 30,000km with no issues what so ever and the disks still have plenty of life left in them.

    It's normal.

Throw the discs away and fit OEM-type pads and discs again. Don't machine them. There is virtually no tolerance to do so. Once theyve had the lip machined off and skimmed, they'll be undersized.

Wow you guys must be hard on brakes. I've done 93k and still on first set of pads and rotors and still have plenty left according to my mechanic. But I have a manual and so I change down a lot instead of braking a lot of the time.

Dsg. But yeah. I thought pads only at 50k...not pads and rotors...

Unfortunately that's fairly standard for all the Euro cars and has been since I started fixing them in the early 80s.

If it's your own car & you have access to a disc machiner then you can try for a light pass but if you were doing a customers car then it isn't worth the risk (warranty, rework, etc). Keep in mind the rotor is basically a big heat sink and removing metal reduces the heat absorption capacity and makes it more likely to heat warp.

I have been known to remove the lip with an angle grinder but that was my own car and I'm not heavy on brakes (currently at 180,000km on original pads with plenty left).

you've made a good choice in DBA but my personal preference is plain face rather than slotted.
