    Brake upgrade options for RS

    Hey guys,

There isnt much talk of upgrading brake on their RSs.

I've been looking for options, Golf R? AUDI S4? anything else?

I installed a new steering wheel in my mates VW T5 transporter. Holy crap the brakes are massive. they barely fitted under 17" wheels, the rotor looked over 320mm in size and 34mm thick. Potentially a cheap upgrade.

Can I make the assumption that almost any VAG car's brakes will bolt up? Stock RS wheels look like they have decent caliper clearance.

    Cheers!

    Iain

i remember reading over at briskoda forum that 18" neptunes don't have as much caliper clearance as the 18" zenith, found on the pre-facelift octavia RS.

probably explains why the Targa Tasmania Octavia RS-P had the zenith rims, instead of the std neptunes.
they had brake upgrade put in - four-pot AP racing calipers matched to 345mm front rotors.

yeah nice brakes. out of my price range i would imagine

i dont mind the old style wheels, i was thinking of matt black powder coating my stock neptunes anyway..........

still, id prefer a factory set of front brakes. so it looks fairly standard.

IIRC, providing you have the wheel clearance, any of the Golf based discs/calipers will fit.

I guess my question would be why are you upgrading? Are you getting brake fade or do you want better bite or better pedal modulation?

There's a lot that can be done within the standard brake footprint.

I must say brakes is something I have never found an issue with in the RS, I would only bother if I was doing some track work really.

    fluid (age & type)
    pads
    cooling
    brake lines
    rotors
    master cylinder brace
    flex in the suspension components
nose dive under brakes (spring rates & winding type)

Just a few things you could look at before going to bigger heatsinks & calipers. Then again, if you can find a bargain somewhere......

thats what im thinking, bargain upgrade.

if i push the car hard, and brake over and over, i get some hardening of the pedal and some fade. its a stock car, i dont expect miracles. from a street point of view it stops very well! thats to be expected from the amount of friction material i wash off my wheels haha

is there a master cylinder brace available for the 1z chassis?

id rather just go larger, as eventually with more power i will need more stopping power. upgrading pads and rotors is a good start, but why not just do now what i will eventually do later and save myself the hassle and cost of doing a bit-by-bit upgrade
