APR Dump pipe stage 2 noise

    Hi all,

Thinking of going stage 2 apr with dump pipe only, keeping standard cat back and air box.

If anyone is runnng this setup or similar please comment. I want to know how noisy with dump pipe only, I want to keep noise down with the stage 2 performance gain. I understand it will be noisy when pushed hard but for daily driving I would like it quiet with no drone around town.

    Cheers MGT

Dump pipe only is a lower throatier note in the cabin coming from the DP area (obviously). Not a significant increase in noise but certainly a change in pitch.

The noise comes when you change the cat-back section i.e. resonator, muffler and rear exhaust diameter. If you don't touch this section you should be fine.

As far as I know, you're better off with a new airbox/intake pipe but the stock exhaust will be fine, as long as you do the dump pipe.

I can't tell the difference in noise from a stock vRS to a St2+ w/ DP and intake when driving with the window down next to the rear end of the stage 2 car.

    Stg 1 = tune
    performance gains.

    Stg 1+ = tune + catback
this setup is only about the noise. no performance gains over the ecu tune.

    Stg 2 = tune + downpipe
this setup is all about performance gains. u also get a slightly throatier noise.

    Stg 2+ = tune + downpipe + catback
this setup is all about performance gains plus noise
i have this setup on mine and i'm loving it.
normal driving and no one will turn to look, give it some revs and the rest is well......

If you want real noise try a resonator delete.

Somewhere along the lines my resonator vaporised and now my exhaust is loud!

So loud that I'm thinking of putting a resonator back in....

It's great when you're giving it some beans but normal day to day driving in city traffic it's hard to drive without making a racket

Thanks for all the input lads, sounds like DP only to go with stage 2 tune will be the go.

Can anyone compare this setup noise wise to say a Golf R, ideally this is the level of noise throatiness I'm after.

The DP will give you performance upgrade (~10kW) once you get the stage 2 tune file. Actually you'll need the tune file anyway otherwise you can get fault lights on the dash from the O2 sensor.

If you want Golf R noise you'll need a new cat-back exhaust. I've gone with a non-resonated system. It is loud and personally is a bit of a pain in city traffic, but when you're going for an enthusiastic drive through the hills is absolutely fantastic. Great noise, DSG farts, the lot...

Compared to the stock exhaust which is dead quiet in comparison (i.e. no DSG farts and minimal exhaust note). This is in the Tig but I imagine the Octavia is probably not that different in terms of stock exhaust note.

What you really want is a bi-modal system so that you can switch in/out a centre muffler/resonator. That way you get to choose a relatively quiet system for city driving and a louder system when you want it.

Not sure what's available off the shelf for the Octy... I'm doing some test fits for Tig exhausts for one of the local tuners.

    Tigger73,

I don't think the Golf R is that noisy, just a little throaty, more than GTI and GTI more than Octy, Octy noise is almost non existent. I don't think I want to change cat back might be too noisy for me.

I'm going to contact APR tomorrow to start the ball rolling, see if they can make comment on DP only noise for the Octy.

APR's RSC exhausts achieve this perfectly - its the whole reason why i got it.

for an off the shelf solution - the one that fits on the mk5 jetta also fits the octavia. no modification required - bolt on.
    part no. is FE100021.

    great noise and farts

That's the best approach I reckon - best bang for buck
The air box does not give any performance gain and does give off a lot of air/whistle noise a well as intake noise
The down pipe will give a dry raspy noise when pushing hard - but no difference when driving normal
