Anyone with oil usage in the RS?

I'm checking it again tomorrow, but haven't noticed any issues since buying it, or even seen it drop, but about to go for a longish trip over Easter so thought its easier to check/top up now then in the middle of nowhere. Although Skoda did check and maybe top it up a month ago. Had a friend with his demo with similar kms hit the low mark and cause the oil light to come on the day after.

What oils are people using, Castrols site recommends the pro stuff that the dealer probably uses, Longlife III, but also 5W30 Edge Sport which should be easy to find.

I figured if it looks like I need some will swing by Skoda tomorrow, but if I can get something decent to just do myself I will.

Anyone had their RS 2L TSFI chew through much oil? Just hit 6000kms here.

I use the castrol edge 5-30 stuff for interim changes, as does my independant vw specialist that I go to for the scheduled services. Mainly because it meets the official Skoda/VW spec, it's easy to come by & reasonably priced (especially at supercheap who often have it on special).

On both the GTI & RS I've had the oil drop to about half way by the time I do the interim change at 7500km - never any more than that. Also, as they get older they seem to use even less.

The 1.8T used no oil at all (18,700km so far).

When the 15,000km service was done I supplied Castrol Edge Sport 5w-30 which is VW502.00 compliant. The only difference I've noticed from the factory fill (BP Ultra-something 0w40 I believe) is a slight millisecond rattle at startup. Quite likely at the next service i'll try Mobil1 0w-40 which is also 502.00 compliant.

502.00 compliance is fine if you are on fixed 15,000km/12month services - 504.00 is the variable service spec oil.

Checked it from cold this morning and the dipstick was down from full when I first got it to about 1/3. The car has done 6000kms but about to drive a bit over Easter, took it into Skoda to see if they'd give me a bit to top up with, they whipped it into service and did it FOC.

So have saved me some time and trouble but think I will got the Castrol next time round.

Still wondering whether I do an oil change in between the main service.

My 2.0 TFSI has used very little in its 6,000 km life (the dipstick may be showing a drop of 1-2 mm).

I use VW 504.00 because I believe it is a better oil than the lower spec stuff.

If you do mainly short trips, losts of stop-start traffic and/or drive hard regularly (ie "severe service") then I would suggest 7,500/6 months oil changes, otherwise 15,000/12 months should be fine.

What are the technical & chemical differences between the two specifications? (besides haveing different numbers).
A few of the changes to to the SAE lubrication spec were purely to comply with changes to environmental/pollution regulations & didn't actually result in a better lubricating/performing oil.

Over at Briskoda, the guy that sells the oil (and makes money no matter if people buy 502 or 504) only recomends the 504 for people on variable service regime. Among other things, in order to fall within an acceptable pH range the oil starts out with a higher alkalynity than is usual so that it isn't excessively acid when the oil is changed at 30,000km. He puts forward quite a reasonable argument as to why us folk on fixed service regimes should stick with a synthetic VW502 spec oil.

Actually Castrol Edge 5w-30 is 504.00 compliant rather than 502.00 compliant. Here are the latest specs I downloaded from Erwin a few days ago.

It's purely symantics though, any oil from either of these lists is fine to use in Australia. Since we have fixed service intervals you can use 502.00 or (optionally) 504.00 spec oils. If we were variable service, then 504.00 would be mandantory.

Unfortunately, stop/start/crawl/get out and have a tea break are an everyday occurance for me to get to work, although other days I'm on freeways.

I'm pretty sure the dipstick was on full when I last checked it in Nov/Dec, Skoda checked it in Jan/Feb while they replaced the headlights, and now checking it at 6000km in early April it was still above minimum, but I reckon about 1/3 of the way up from min though. My guestimate puts that at around 500-750ml and I ran the car in a careful way, ie letting it warm up, not going over 3/4 of the revs until 1000km etc as per the book. Also didn't nanny it, so I'm wondering if the oil usage in some of these is not so much random as it is people driving in heavy traffic vs nicer conditions.

    No unordinary usage here.
I supply my own Edge Sport oil to the dealer for a saving of approx $65 per service.

I don't think the Australian Edge Sport is the same product as the European/UK stuff - doesn't make sense & I haven't bothered to check with Castrol Tech Dept but the TDS linked to the Australian Castrol site only says 502.0
