Anyone with oil usage in the RS?

I think they may have revised the 502.00 spec when the 504.00 spec came out? I seem to remember edge 5-30 being on the 502.00 spec when I first got my GTI (about 2 years ago). In any case, it doesn't really matter, it's fine to use.

What are the technical & chemical differences between the two specifications? (besides haveing different numbers).
A few of the changes to to the SAE lubrication spec were purely to comply with changes to environmental/pollution regulations & didn't actually result in a better lubricating/performing oil.

Over at Briskoda, the guy that sells the oil (and makes money no matter if people buy 502 or 504) only recomends the 504 for people on variable service regime. Among other things, in order to fall within an acceptable pH range the oil starts out with a higher alkalynity than is usual so that it isn't excessively acid when the oil is changed at 30,000km. He puts forward quite a reasonable argument as to why us folk on fixed service regimes should stick with a synthetic VW502 spec oil.

My understanding is that the 504 spec is higher for wear resistance on cams and followers because it is also 507 compliant, and the PD engines (which require 507 oils these days) are quite fussy about cam and follower wear.

Given the issues some 2.0 TFSI engines have had with premature wear on the high pressure fuel pump cam lobe and follower I'm happy to go with something that has good wear properties on cams and followers.

Preferably Castrol Prof III, but sometimes Shell Helix (both VW 504.00/507.00 approved). These days I buy a 5 L container (for my Octy) or 2x 5 litre containers (for my transporter) of Caltex Prof III from the spares dept before I give the vehicle to the service guys (strangely enough it is cheaper than letting the service area supply the oil in bulk ! ). There is always some left over, and also I can be more confident the correct oil went in my engine.

Had a chat with my cousin who is a VW/Audi mechanic and was formerly a Mazda/Honda mechanic.

He says that the VW engines don't need a run in service as they do that in the factory and he rarely ever sees metal at all at the first oil change. interestingly enough the Hyundais they also service at his dealership have filters jammed full of it. Also because of the larger filters he said they last the 15k/12mths fine, but he finds it really strange that Skoda don't use a 7.5k/6mths interim service of just an oil change, but leaving the filter as that's what they do with the VWs. I think I will give Skoda/VW HQ a call and ask about it.

Fair enough, but i can't see the point of changing the oil and leaving the filter unless you are doing a quick flush with cheap oil. For the $20 part & 15 minutes labour...........

Yeah I thought that but he said, its pretty much a waste of time, the filters last for ages and were designed to do so whereas oil still gets worn out, you'd think there would be still a fair bit of old oil in the filter though.

Everything with VW seems unusual really in terms of my previous cars.

I'd guess 500ml in there, maybe 750ml at most.

I'm sure there is enough surface area in there that it doesn't plug & bipass except in exceptional circumstances.

My reasoning for changing the filter is that (when I was swinging spanners) I had a few hassles with customers claiming their oil wasn't changed because "the oil was still black". It caused such acrimony that I refused to do an oil change without doing the filter. It's nice to have clean oil for a few thousand kilometres after a change.

My vRS was serviced at 15K and the oil replaced with Shell Helix as recommended. I next checked it at 19,500km and had stick in almost a litre
