Nothing else will integrate as well with the car controls or give you as many functions.

Several will fit but will they work as well Probably not.

If its just because of the Navigation you either have to put up with it or perhaps buy a Tomtom for the times the 510 drives you crazy

Integration isn't really a problem (as long as you can get an appropriate trim plate) since the RNS fills a pretty stock double DIN hole. The only things that appear on the RNS screen are sort of pointless (although pretty) like the fact you have turned the AC on... which you can see by the little light anyway.

MFD integration is nice but not by any stretch essential (and not possible on plenty of models, not sure on the Octavia). Steering wheel controls... well there is one thing I do like, but again not essential and many aftermarket options try to use these anyway.

Sadly most hard install sat navs suck. We have the Pioneer AVIC from a couple of years ago and the RNS510 and both are pretty ordinary in terms of features and interface.

The RNS doesn't do speed/safety cams or school zones pretty much at all. Sure you can patch in POI's but it's just not the same for something still being sold (for the moment). Why they couldn't update it for audible warnings is beyond me.

The Pioneer AVIC FB20T I have does audible warnings... except it's not in anyway route aware. So if a speed camera (or railway crossing for some reason) is within XXm of you you get a beep. Great if it's on your path... sort of painful if you're driving parallel with the rail line which was a road over it every 500m The Pioneer also takes some pretty funky routes at times although it does get you there in the end.
The beauty of most aftermarket units is they support bluetooth, MDI (USB/iPod/ETC) plus many even come with the RVC in the box making them much much cheaper than having to retrofit RNS + Bluetooth + MDI + RVC as separate modules. Newer cars tend to have MDI + Bluetooth anyway which dilutes the value a little, but for things like my Van I had none of those

Both units are fine with a defined street address but tend to be terrible when trying to go to a named place. This means you have to look up the address rather than being able to rely on "Taronga Zoo" (which is a bad example because that one actually works ).

I find that half the time I'm using my iPhone with Google Maps for nav to get somewhere if I don't have a street address and then press the "Take me home" button on the built in one to get back

I'd love to see car manufacturers team up with someone like TomTom in the car since they are so damn good a it... either that or sell their own premium double din unit. Problem is most cars don't do single or double din installs anymore, they integrate everything making changing the head unit near impossible (so at least VW have that option open). They did make a unit in 2009 but it died off pretty quickly.

Another option could be to use the RVC input to mirror the display from an android/iPhone and use their maps. Problem with that is you loose all touch screen stuff.

Apple have their "in the car" thing going on, but there is no mention of VW yet.

Mazda actually have Tomtom units in the CX5 and other models but it isn't quite the same as the portable model from what I could see in my friends car. Also harder to do the map updates. Havent had a drive so not sure how good the mapping is either.

Mazda at least use a stand alone SD card so it can be easily updated.
