    Question Acceleration rattle

    Hi guys,

I've noticed today that when I accelerate there's a rattle which starts around the 2000rpm and stops around 3000rpm.
It's only when I accelerate, not when I slow down.

The rattle (from what I can locate) is passenger side engine-bay.
I can describe the rattle as if there's a screw/bolt/washer loose. It's like metal vibrating on metal.

Mind you the car has only done roughly 800km's.

Do any of you know what this might be??

    Thanks,

    Lex

Check for clearances around things in the engine bay.

The reason why it happens on acceleration and not slow down is because the torque reaction sees engine go one way on acceleration and the other on slow down.

It could be an exhaust bracket that was not wuite as tight as it should be, or something else that hsa moved just a little.

You may need another person to help you out while the accelerator is pressed.

Is this car an RS? may have a similar problem as the gti wastegate rattle which can be found on this forum

I haven't noticed it for a while now, but my vRS has had a similar thing going on from time to time. I thought it was resonance coming from gas hurtling through the exhaust system. I couldn't nail it down, but it was an intermittent metallic very high frequency rattle only while accelerating. Maybe I've just become used to it. I don't know what your engine is. Mine will run on Jet A1 (a diesel). I'll check it out later today, but I'd forgotten about it until seeing this thread.

as buzuki said - its the famous wastegate rattle found on the ea888 TSI engines (mk6 gti, a3, vRS). in particular the 2l turbo which uses the k03 turbo.

there is a massive discussion thread on this forum, under the golf mk6 section.

there is now an official fix for the mk6 gti.

i tried (bout a yr ago) to get mine fixed using the same tpi, but got knocked by skoda aus, actually i should say vw aus.
vw canberra said they won't fix mine because "its not a vw"!! "skoda will need to issue their own tpi"
    wat a load of bu115hit.
then again i'm not surprised considering i was trying to convince the vw service lead tech that the vRS has the exact same engine as the mk6 gti!!

i didn't bother with it after. i've learnt to live with the rattle.
it doesn't damage the engine, or affect performance watsoever.
    ...just the ears.

some of the gti folks who've had the fix (installing a weighted clip to the wastegate actuator) have reported the rattle coming back louder after a few months.

Is this primarily there when the engine's cold? It is unlikely to be wastegate-induced at such a low mileage. It's more likely valve-train noise, which is quite common with these engines. Generally, it will quieten a little when the oil warms up and also when the engine is better run in.

As mentioned above. If its the 2.0TSI engine in your car then it most likely is the wastegate rattle. Extremely common on MK6 GTIs.

Mine has the wastegate rattle. Using 95 or 98 made no difference to the noise in my car. Without the clip it sounded like an empty trailer. With the clip its better but still noticeable.

I had the clip installed under warranty at Brisbane Prestige.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for the late reply, but I was totally swamped this weekend with work.

Mine is the Petrol RS. I always fill up with 98.
Today I tested it out while I was in the tunnel, I opened my windows and kept the revs around the 2500. The noise was amazingly loud and it sounds like the exhaust was hanging loose on the car, or as described above "like an empty trailer".

I went to the service department on Saturday, they took it for a drive and they came back with "we can't hear anything, you might need to leave the car here for a few days so we can do an in depth investigation".

Of course I wasn't satisfied with this, so tomorrow I'm taking it up with Skoda and see what they have to say about this.

    I'll keep you guys posted!!

    Lex
