    2008 pre-FL RS - what's it worth?

I am thinking about changing my wife's 2008 RS and was looking for some guesses as to what it might be worth.

It's a diesel wagon with DSG in race blue with just over 40,000 klms. I just bought the Allianz/VW extended warranty so the car is covered for another three years and that should be worth something, I think.

There aren't many comparable cars on Carsales but the black 2008 is the closest, I guess. But it's got 76,000 klms on it.

I have been getting trade-in values from dealers of between $16,000 (which is a joke) and $26,000 (which turned out to be too good to be true).

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I got $24k for my 2008 rs petrol manual wagon with 23,000ks as a trade on a GTI last june , similar car has been on carsales since then dropped from $30k to $25k with about 30,000ks , most of the octavia's have been lurking there for 6 to 12 months , trade is your best bet , maybe $22k on another VAG product .

I was a bit miffed at my value , but as a company vehicle the loss is not personal ,the dealer took 5 months to shift it after some heavy discounting .

    Thanks for the info.

So what you're saying is that trying to sell it privately might not net me much more money and would probably not be worth the hassles?

I was offered $19k from a Skoda dealer on Yeti but at that price, it hardly seemed worth it. Plus, my wife doesn't really like the looks of the Yeti.

Its difficult to shift pre Fl , dealers dont show a lot of interest, and thats VAG dealers , heaven knows what other brands would offer .

With the new shape due next year even the FL'S will take a hit , not many people appreciate how good they are .

Its a great car , i do miss the space sometimes , maybe you should keep it , its very low km for a diesel , best of luck .

could I ask how much you paid for your extended warranty, and if you shopped around?

My warranty is up in 2 weeks and i'm looking at extending it

Not to go off on a tangent, but I did shop around and got it for a tad over $1,600, which was more than $1,000 cheaper than my local (Canberra) dealer.

Send me a private message if you want more details.

Yeah, no dealer has knocked me over with a trade-in value so, looking at it objectively, probably best to keep it for a while. It's covered by the warranty and if it's only "worth" $15-20,000 now, how much more can it really drop over the next few years? Plus, I effectively got a discount of over $7,000 when I bought it three years ago so I really can't complain about the value now.

The standard price for the Allianz warranty is $1800 for another 3 yrs. It used to be slightly less for another 2 yrs. I was thinking about it, but on average I sell cars close to 5-6yrs and the warranty wouldn't add another $1800 to the resale price and if something went wrong, I'm still $1800 ahead.
