I wonder if your car been a VRS has that sound enhancer speaker bolted to the firewall, that is causing the extra increased presumption of engine noise......
The 125's didn't have it, and I know Skoda are installing it in the petrols
Hi, I am guessing this could go in the Diesel forum although I am thinking it may be an Octavia series III problem. I recently took delivery of a new VRS TDI wagon and the engine is very noisy at low revs in 1st & 2nd gear (probably all gears but road & wind noise starts to increase). I know diesels are inherently noisy although after owning the 125TDI for almost 7 years I have to say I am either concerned of knocking in the big end bearings, or disappointed in how much noisier the new series engine is.
Can anyone confirm it is simply a noisier engine?
I dread having to engage with the dealer and head down the long and pointless argument over it not being my imagination.....

The 135 is noisier at idle than the former TDI's as the injection pressure is higher. Is the engine cover on, as even on my lesser 103 mk6 TDI engine the difference with it on and off is considerable. I've had a listen to a 135 and it is a bit noisy, and that's normal, it's how you get 380nm stock!
If it really drives you nuts get a decent tune on it, oddly enough by changing the injection pattern, they become a lot less clattery at idle, which seems counter intuitive but there you go. FYI any plug in diesel box doesn't have the injection control of a proper OBD, so that's not an option for noise I'm afraid.
So complaining at the dealer is going to get you zip, it's how it is. You can always get more under-bonnet sound proofing, or look to beef up the engine cover. Or turn up the radio?

Hi,
I test drove new 3x Octavia in one session, 110 TDI Style, 162 TSI RS and 135 TDI Scout. I was quite amazed at how much noisier the RS and Scout were compared to the 110 TDI. That combined with the fact that I couldn't really feel any extra performance from the 135 TDI convinced me to buy the 110 TDI.
Cheers,
Karl

To MarksVRS,
You sure it's not the sound generator as rjt86 suggested? one way to test it is to switch between Sport and Eco in 'VRS Mode', if that makes a difference to you, it's the sound generator, you can have it disable physically or through the system. I used to dislike it, but I found myself liking it after a while.
Thanks for all the replies, sorry I haven't checked in earlier. It appears the consensus is that the 135TDI may be a bit noisier (i.e. more clattery) at low revs under acceleration. Yes, one of the first things I did was to play around with the driver settings including the "sports" VRS setting which apparently includes enhanced engine sound although it didn't make a difference to the "diesel" clatter (in fact I'm not sure of the relevance with a diesel). Yes, the engine cover is on also!
I was just worried the bottom end might fall out although I guess I just need to get used to it and turn up the 10 speaker upgraded Canton sound system!

I just got back from a trip to Qld. It was a great drive, very comfortable all the way and easily done in a day, although I am convinced the engine is too noisy to be OK. I am going to find another 135TDI demo to compare and then I will be satisfied.

Mine is a 2014 rs diesel. It too is noisy, but it's a diesel and 800+ freeway was enough for me.

Just to fuel some fire here, I noticed randomly on Briskoda while looking for something else that just recently the diesel RSs have started to come with the smaller brakes the same as the GTi and not the larger GTI P that the petrols still appear to come with.
Cost cutting, my Yeti had base level Golf front brakes, I swapped out to some used GTI hangers and rotors and it is now where it needs to be.
