1.8TSI Coolant Leak - Wiring Connector

    Hi all,

I have had the 135,000km service done today by a dealer in Sydney (I know, I know - but still have a service pack on the car for one more service...)

As part of the service, the dealer has found that there is a coolant leak evident from the coolant tank - requiring replacement of the tank and to then carry out a wiring repair to the corroded wiring.

Long story short - this issue was raised 2.5 years and 45,000 km ago by the same dealer, but when I questioned them (no evidence or explanation, just announced on pick up of car) they eventually said it was a mistake and was someone else's car. Car hasn't skipped a beat since, including a lot of highway driving until we moved back to Sydney last year. Dealer has shown evidence this time and I will have it done - but interested to hear of any experience on this issue and costs. I've sought a quote from an independent but dealer is quoting $892.

The coolant tanks on these cars are garbage and honestly should be an item that is periodically replaced as part of the cars regular service schedule. Its very common for the coolant tanks to leak/crack in various places as the plastic becomes hard and brittle with the heat - and the spot where the level sensor is leaks and then it corrodes the wires which sounds like what has happened in your case.

The quote sounds very very expensive though - a new coolant bottle is approx $80 and you would be able to get a new genuine plug and wiring repair kit for approx $50.

    New coolant tank: 5Q0121407M - Coolant Reservoir, Audi 8V S3/TT & Volkswagen MK7 GTI/R– VAGPARTS Australia

New plug: 1K0973202 - Flat contact housing with Contact Locking Mechanism - Genu– VAGPARTS Australia (just double check the part number on your existing plug to make sure its a match for this one 1K0 973 202.

Repair wire: 000979021E - Wire Set - Audi 4G A6/S6/A7– VAGPARTS Australia (probably a good idea to check with VAGParts if this is the correct wire to suit the above plug as there are various versions of these repair wires)

Another alternative to the new plug and the repair wire is one of these which is a new plug with a certain length of new wiring already attached: NEW Coolant Tank Reservoir Sensor Connector Pigtail For 1J0973202 VW Audi | eBay
