1980 B1 Passat Project

Frank's motor has been living on borrowed time. We did all we could to prolong the inevitable but today it's time ran out.

We've decided to rebuild it rather than replace it with something more modern.

It's a period high performance 1600 so for nostalgia and economy's sake it will remain 1600.

This will also give me the opportunity to clean up the wiring and paint the engine bay.

The previous owner claimed it had Scat brand valves.

There's a fair bit of old damage in the chambers from foreign objects including what looks like an M6 nut impression.



80mm Flat top pistons



The motor got real hot when it died and baked the paint right off the rocker cover.

Usual story, death by overheating.



Measured the cylinder pressures, number 2 was blowing bubbles into the radiator.



This block off plug was split and leaking water, it's not clear if this was caused by the fault, or was the cause of the fault.





Bores could be better. I think I'm looking for a set of 80.5mm flat top pistons and a rebore.



More foreign object damage, I wish I knew more of this engine's history.





M6? Wonder how that got in there and how it got out again!

I remember I got some foreign object into the old 1.6 in my yellow mk 1, the valves fared much worse!
