Good stuff. When I first started the video I thought it was of you racing in the MK1 - going by the sound and the acceleration!

Nice car, and I like the 'Work in Progess' sticker.

    Cheers

Just got the reverse lights working! It took 4 hours!

The reverse switch in these things is in about the most inaccessible place possible.

The terminals on the switch had broken loose and I was able to re-attach them with solder but the innards were stuffed too.

The body of the switch is crimped together but I managed to pull it to bits, clean it out, polish up the contacts and crimp it back together again.

Had to re-route the wiring too as it was fouling on the steering rack.

After all of that I still had no lights and tracked that down to a simple blown fuse.

Also replaced the front door rubbers with straight off the shelf pinch weld from Clark rubber. Perfect fit!

After working through bunch of tidy up stuff this week, Frank just passed his Roadworthy!
Registration is booked in for Thursday.

Some of the stuff that I've worked through this week.

    • Restored and fitted battery clamp.
    • Pressure washed gearbox and undercarriage.
    • Welded in new fuse box mounting bracket.
    • Fixed one door lock
    • Repaired two window regulators
    • Fixed the wiring faults that arose from unplugging the fuse box to weld in the new bracket!
    • Connected the check straps on all doors
    • Bled the brakes (again)
    • Replaced the indicator stalk with a brand new one (from Israel!)
    • Replaced one of the rear seat belts.
    • Installed handbrake cable retaining clips
    • Glued down a dash mat to cover the cracks (temporary fix)
    • Fixed the horn again!

We were going to move the car about the driveway and it wouldn't start.

Turns out the starter wire had been snagged by the steering arm and pulled into the block.

Not for the first time by the state of the wire.

I cut back the damaged section and replaced the wire to the starter solenoid.

On a Passat this wire is very hard to see as it runs under the exhaust manifold.

It is also exposed to extreme temperatures as it runs so close to the down pipes.

I made the replacement connection from silicon insulated cable to take the heat, the only piece I had lying about is usually used in RC cars.

Also had to replace the vacuum hoses to the brake booster as they had worn through against a sharp edge on the battery tray.

Frank went to the park today too.

    Looking great Pete,

For heat applications I usually run the cable through some fibreglass wiring flex conduit, should be able to get some at your auto lekky supliers, used all the time on heavy equipment wiring.
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,
    Grant...

Cheers Grant, I know the stuff you're referring to. I didn't have any to hand today, I'll have to pick some up during the week.
