It was related to the timing belt tensioner. I had the timing belt, waterpump, tensioner etc changed at CVWC about 20000km ago. However Gareth informed me that someone had installed the Audi tensioner instead of the VW part. They look similar but there are differences of a few mm's that shows over time.
Anyway apart from the $86 to tow my car to CVWC, Gareth fixed it free of charge so I am appreciative of that. I am just glad that this was fixed before I went to the track, otherwise I might not have had an engine after the timing belt tensioner failed.
There is no difference between the Audi and VW ones ?
The difference is between the engines . The A3/Golf gti engines use one which have a washer on the back , hence the reason why the belt is sitting too far into the block and leaving the gap on the end . The other type used is on the Passat/a4 1.8t Early (AEB engine) .
