Try rotating the wheels front to back.

A friend of mine had a problem with his missus Astra and it was in and out of the garage. They got new tyres and the noise went away! We reckon it must have been a manufacturing fault in one of the tyres.

I wonder if this is why I'm getting noises - a bit like a scraping sound that comes and goes...
    Nothing to see here...

I rekon that noise is the air con recirc flap failing to open or close, so the servo tries again and again. It gives up after a while.

Wouldn't surprise me. Is it hard to get to/change?

I'd count on it being a real PITA, my mechanic has avoided it many times. I've never seen a writeup on how to fix it.

Also I think vag-com can report a failed A/C actuator.

    You're a champ - thanks!

Although after reading that thread there is no way in hell I am attempting that job. Guhhh. I doubt it'd be cheap to get someone to do as well.

Come to think of it, warm air constantly blows in when I'm driving even with the climate OFF.

i'm getting similiar actuator / servo knocking noises, but mines definitely coming from plastic box in the front passenger footwell/underdash towards the kick panel.
