Whining under load

Hey all, first post.

I drive a mk4 1.6l GLE. Over the last week or two I've noticed that under load my car is making a subtle whine that quickly builds to quite an annoying level. Hoping someone can get me on track with where to start.

So first; there is no whine when I'm in Park, no matter how much I rev it.

It only seems to happen at a speed of 40kmph or more but I'm convinced it's rpm based rather than speed based.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the whine quickly fades when I take my foot off the accelerator. It is non-existent when in neutral as well.

do you mean that the whine stops when you are travelling at speed over 40kph and press the clutch ..

The whine only seems appear after 40kph. Any thing less than that I can't hear it at all.

It's an automatic.
I'm starting to think it could be transmission which is a real pain in the wallet.

sounds like transmission related to me..
