Great its fixed, ah being around the product for nearly 20 yrs you might get it a bit wrong sometimes, but just for the record some 1.6 Mk4 motors DO have the full electronic thermo in the whole housing . good job it wasnt or your $19 dollars would have been $250 and buy the way you r mechanic is robbing himself for $19, i would be questioning the quality at that price. Anyway not for me to say.
Jmac, I have about 14 months experience with VAG cars and don't doubt your knowledge.
In this case it just worked out much cheaper for the owner, who has every right to use aftermarket products.

He said that he bought the aftermarket thermostat from his local Autopro, so no mechanics got robbed.

Hey speed you might want to check if im right

Did i mention dont use aftermaket products???? i think not but i did mention that $19 may be a fair tad on the cheap side. Ive been with the high end of the market since i left school so im not used to seeing a $19 thermostat being on any invoice, i would be questioning fitting a $19 thermostat to an old 180 Datsun so go figure. Oh and my bad he used auto pro good luck.
