First things first, loosen your bolts (or nuts on other cars) BEFORE you jack the car up and make it potentially unstable. All you need to do is crack the seal, but it's just safer to do it with the car on the ground.
VW Bolts shouldn't be put on using a rattle gun, rather a torque wrench set to the right setting. (That and they tend to tighten over time all by themselves). Failing all else, more leverage, which I'm sure NRMA will provide by way of an extension bar on the wheel brace.
Failling that, just use Golf Loon's method: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=10618
edit: My bad, I'm half asleep and thought you couldn't get the nuts out, just ignore me and go about your business ;P
