I'm keen to upgrade to something abit better than the Mobil 1 I've been using and I've heard good things about Royal Purple (Although it is damn expensive)
I use Royle Purple 10w40 and change every 10,000ks instead of Mobil 1 every 5,000ks since after reading Street Commodores oil test. Mobil 1 rated very poor.

Also using Castrol Edge 5W-30 in my V6 Bora 2003: compatible with VW 504.00 and VW 507.00
But I wonder if an older engine (over 200k km) needs a different oil?

With a higher mileage engine you might want to consider a 5w-40 or 5w-50 oil so its thicker when hot.

If you do regular oil changes with a good quality oil then you wont need to be concerned with sludge buildup - that really only happens on poorly maintained vehicles that do not get regular maintenance.

I used to use this in my Mk6 GTI as it consumed a small amount of oil, and I found the oil consumption reduced somewhat from moving to the 5w-40 oil. This one is VW502/505 approved. Penrite Enviro+ Engine Oil - 5W-40 5 Litre | Supercheap Auto

I've always used Nulon Euro 5w-30, Nulon "were" AU owned and operated. Plus their 5w-30 Euro oil was VW approved for 504.00 spec.

HOWEVER... Nulon sold out to Fuchs.
It appears their 5w-30 European oil is now also used for 507.00 diesel engines. Whether they changed the oil to meet the spec or it's just a marketing ploy I'm unsure.

But I have recently decided I might start running something a little thicker as the motor is getting on in age.
So something in a 5w40 might be the go

I used the Penrite Enviro+ for quite a few years without any issues, but have recently switched over to the Nulon Euro 5w-30 on both my VAG cars as apparently it is a better quality base stock oil. Every oil that meets 502 (petrol) also meets the 505 (diesel) approval, and likewise, any oil that meets 504 (petrol) also meets the 507 (diesel) equivalent. I don't think ive ever seen an oil meet just one of the specs.

I was not aware that Nulon was no longer an Aussie owned company - so that's a bit of a shame if they have been bought out by a European brand - but in saying that, Fuchs are one of the best in the business so it cant be all bad.

I just popped out to the garage to check my bottles of Nulon oil (some of which I only purchased in the past 4-6 weeks) and they all still say Made in Australia on them.......
