The exhaust looks like a bolt on?

Forgive my potential ignorance, but if it's meant to fit the golf, then why can't you just rip out a jack, some cork gaskets or gasket goo and a set of spanners?
Or is this for a 3dr?

^this. I think getting the old exhaust off will be the hardest part. You'll probably need to cut it out. itd be a bitch doing it on your back but definitely do-able. Did you get a bung for the 2nd O2 hole?

Nothing that a healthy dose of WD40/RP7 and a big hammer can't fix

For best results, douse the bolts in penetrating fluid overnight.

Be sure to use the closed side of a spanner where possible as well.

Exhausts are awful to remove but not impossible. If you're most desperate then pull out the angle grinder.

I'm 100% hoping this is the case, but I just want a plan of attack before getting stuck into it, and then hitting a massive snag I didn't plan for.. It's also my only car, and kind of the only one around I can borrow to go grab parts in (all parts places are many kms away), so I want to get a heads up of what I'll need well before I start taking it apart and it's up on blocks in the middle of the street etc..

Yeah, I think someone mentioned that it depends on wether you want to keep the original exhaust in tact, if not, cut it up and the removal will be much easier, and if you do want the original exhaust in tact, you may have to drop the rear sub frame.. which seems like an extra hassle for sure without a full workshop.. Is there much of a need/market for original exhausts for the 1.8T?

No, I didn't get the extra bung, someone said I didn't need it.. ?!?

Yeah, I'd like to be able to get access to spray the **** out of the bolts several hours before working on them, it just depends on where I'm doing the whole removal/install, and having it high enough to access the bolts and then left overnight in the street like that etc. It shouldn't matter driving it the morning after spraying it all with WD40 etc should it? I'll just probs get a heap of smoke, but bolts still easier to remove, yeah?

Suggestions on best penetrating spray? I am using INOX at the moment for all lube stuff, and am a little sick of buying heaps of specialist stuff for single use jobs, but if there's a product that'll make removing those bolts heaps easier than INOX, and doesn't cost the earth, then I'm all ears. But if INOX is 'good enough', then I'll stick with that. I also may have some RP7 laying around..

PS - still procrastinating starting my build thread (where the bulk of all this should be going), does anyone know if you can change the title of the thread after starting it? And where is the best section to start it? in the MK4 section? or the members rides section? It seems like way more mk4 people will spot it in the mk4 section, and maybe more 'other' people will find it in the main rides section.. Thoughts/experiences?

I reckon you will want a spare bung on hand, unless 42DD sent you one. All US mk4 GTIs have 2 probes I am pretty sure.

If you want a thread title changed, PM me I can do it.

You could do the exhaust on stands but a hoist would be easier. If you look at the exhaust by the rear axle, you should be able to spot a couple of dents in the pipe. Marking where to cut it, so that you can fit a replacement rear silencer easily. Would allow you to save the exhaust for future use.

So finally ive started to strip gti engine bay, label all wires and plugs, was hard to find where to start from but once i got started it was easy to follow the loom around and and take it apart. Drivers side of the loom is completly free just the passenger side where it looks like it enters the firewall? Then disconnect the aircon comp and the shifter side of things then from there ill be taking it out! one question will be what points should i mount the chains to it out? I dont want to take the whole kframe out but instill need front brakes and shafts how would i go with this?

Finally installed my amp mount/rack into the boot of the car.

Pretty happy with the outcome in terms of how it looks, it's rigidity and how fits in the boot. The space underneath is perfect to fit a removable sub and means I still get to use the opening to the car.
The shelf is It's bolted to factory holes in the parcel shelf so I've not had to drill and make the car unroadworthy in the process.
Only problem I'm finding is that there is too small of a gap between the amp and the top board so tightening wires is a very tricky process and there is a bit of a heat build-up as well - I think I'm going to look at installing fans to cool the amps down.

Quick question, why are you not swapping the whole subframe (k frame) with all the running gear all at once? This is meant to be the easiest method for doing this conversion.
