I had some similar, ended up taking them for a swim in some flood water which they didnt like...
using the original frames and some home job building I retro fitted some decent h3 reflectors in there (brand escapes me) from autobarn.
were great until I bottomed out, popping the light out and dragging it down the road by the wires...

easy to rig up. I ended up running mine on a separate switch as I didnt have a front fog light switch at that stage, was run off something (cigarette lighter?) so they would turn off with the rest of the car if you left them on by accident

Put a deposit on some 4 pot brembo front brakes with 2 piece discs and pads and braided lines. Came off of a turbo beetle apparently

Is this a wiring issue Anthony? Do you have any of the wiring diagrams from the old/new engines?

Might be wise to pick up a spare thermostat from Imparts, HSY or the like given the trouble you had - heck Gavin (h100vw) might even have a spare knocking around that he can flog off to you? Good effort to get it sorted though - how does it run?

Removed the starter motor from my gti and regreased all the gears inside to get rid of that annoying squeal I had every time I started my car. Worked a treat, starts smooth every time

Another thing to add to the list ... Mine is definitely more noticeable in Winter.
