currently looking at something like a v-checker pro for my car (want to get rid of an air bag fault)
anyone know something a little bit better than a v-checker that will actually record logs for you?
the accessories earth under the dash came loose and car went a little nuts, now it has an airbag fault so hopefully all it needs is to be cleared.
not sure i want to go all the way with a ross tech... i'm pressuming the MKIV needs the KII (or HEX) cable
They charge $260 + $60 shipping, bit steep. $143 for the vchecker delivered is not too bad though
i've got someone on vortex trying to help me out with my car and they want to see some logs... so was thinking maybe i should go something that can record logs (to files) hmmm $143 vs $320.....
WEll got the bushings pressed in today at my local mechanic for nothing, so that kept me pretty happy for the day and finished the front shocks/spring install as well as the full refresh. VERY keen to see and feel the difference.
Whilst the car was up I added the Tyrolsport caliper stiffs.
Rear shocks/springs need to go in still - might get the lights on and do that. Tomorrow's plan is to have a crack at claybar or maybe headlight resto.

It was a mission, but fulfilled my two goals of learning something new and feeling satisfied about doing a job myself that i'm not necessarily trained for. All in all i estimate 18 man-hours to refresh the suspension, and I haven't done the rears yet. The major learning curve and timesink was deconstructing the first side. I'm a naturally slow (methodical?) worker and doing the research helped (thanks vww and vortex, and a bit of google).
Jmac's tip of dropping the subframe should actually be bold in every suspension DIY. Just save the hassle and drop the damn subframe everytime, its only 4-6 bolts.
I noticed two tears in my CV boots, but given that I might be replacing driveshafts, F&R sways, etc soon anyway I let them be. The tears are along the seams of the corrugations, and my dad-in-law reckons it doesn't introduce much dust and to leave it.
Just hoping the rears are easier...
As for tomorrow, I'm knocking over the headlights first as its also a chance to crank out the polisher. if all goes well, i'll wash and clay and then have a stab at some badly over-sprayed or swirly/scratched panels and see how i go. Need my mate's tin of Purple Haze and LimePrime to really do a proper job though.

^Good stuff mate, congrats on the accomplishment. It always feels good to step back and realise that you've done something on your own (and learnt something new too).

My Mk1 Project
Attempted 3 things today:-
1 - Finish front suspension install - FAIL - see
2 - Do "DMS Dan's Headlight Resto" - SUCCESS - see here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f22/...tml#post582894
3 - Clay and polish bootlid with nasty primer overspray from a dodgy repair - FAIL - pics to come.
Very happy with the headlight resto though.

Inspected CV's which arnt split but decided to throw the grease everywhere and found out the breather hose from the activated charcoal filter is split about 5 times $50 to replace a small piece of plastic yay and fuel lines are around $250. Also removed most of the vacuum lines to inspect but still cant see a broken one. Wonder if the bad idle will ever be fixed. I can here a suction noise coming from the rear but cant find the problem.![]()
