Do NSW guys need to 'pass' something to get there rego...? all this talk of new tyres and what not... or have i missed something.

Vicco new sticker in the mail and if you dont pay with in the next month or so you car will then be unregestered and then need a road worthy and then re rego'd.

Yep, we have a rego test, where they check your cars braking ability, lights and tyre tread, and if they deem any of them crap, they fail you and you have to go change them

i payed insurance today (there goes $1200) and i have rego coming up in about a month, so annoyed that they are only a month apart

In NSW, once a car is more than three years old, it must pass a pre-registration inspection (often referred to as a pink-slip). It's a general road-worthiness certificate where they check the operation and condition of tyres, lights, engine (for leaks), etc, and they also do a braking test where they ensure the brakes are able to produce more than a minimum-level braking force.

You need to pass this inspection, and have your CTP cover sorted out, before you can register the vehicle.

I'd be asking for the reading for that. 35% is the darkest legal tint, they can't legitimately fail you if they can't show you the reading...

Spent $1100~ on changing the water pump and timing belt etc. Sigh.

It better be reliable after this -
replaced MAF
replaced coolant sensor
replaced front rotors
machined rear pads
replaced water pump (failed)
changed timing belt

This is all in the space of about 12 months

I bought this for reliability and to save some cash. Quite the contrary.

I justified buying a newer car by trading out of a 370,000km Commodore that was costing me ****loads to keep on the road.

The Golf hasn't been perfect, but hey, we didn't buy Corollas here.

If you got a WRX, 200SX, Integra Type R, 306 GTI6, Renaultsport, VR6 etc etc they would all cost money. An SS Commo or Xr6/8 would be more sensible but meh, it's not what we're after.

I'm about to buy rego, fit new front tyres, and prepare to do front discs/pads myself. AND I've already shelled out $1100 for the t-belt service.

It's all worth it though and I won't go back to driving a non-sporty car again.

I've spent as much on this as my first car cost to buy - and that only caused me grief after I messed around with it. And if it did stuff up I could buy all the parts for next to nothing and fit 90% of them myself.

Also, I don't feel so bad about the price I'm paying now - it's getting done by one of the best in the biz! Fingers crossed the car will have another 100,000kms of safe and enjoyable motoring.
