OBD2 Scanners - feedback or recommendations

    Hi all,

just wondered if anyone has recommendations for a particular OBD2 scanner. Aware there is quite the variety out there, I've got a Bentley manual and figure its easy enough to look up codes but have seen a fair number of people go with the V-checker pro.
what about something from the local market ?....

mate u got me all interested in this stuff and after a long time browsing, the scangauge doesnt do what i want which is boost or egt or afr. ive read loads of reviews and its very useful for the trip meter aspect of it but thats not something im interested in.

another obd2 scanner that there is for my s3 is the liquid race gauge which does graphs, dials etc etc but it is quite expensive. heres a link to it, im unsure if they have a mount for mk4 gti's but try ebay.

hey mate, you can easily get caught up in the search I know I queried ebay and I think there are a few options under 100 bucks that will do the scan and clear codes so that may be my final choice or the well known v-scanner pro.

One you need to spend the dough to get what you want and what you will use it for, . I use VCDS for all of my VAG stuff which meets and exceeds all what i need scanner wise, of course scanners are really only a base tool and mostly a guide really. They are not fast enough and if you dont get code then what??? you need an oscilliscope and a low amps probe to do the diagnostic stuff properly, AF logger, smoke machine and the list goes on. Catering for the other stuff i use a Launch Diagun which has been very good so far. Still costs plenty. If all you want is basic codes and stuff go Vagcom or Vchecker. Ive been at a few meetings of late and met up with other diag techs that cater for more than just euro and one guy in particular has 7!!!! scan tools. And thats how it is, one scanner will do what another cant, to answer what is the best scan tool, well really cant and ive done it for years.
good luck shopping if you are using it for vag go vagcom IMO. Ive had my licensed version for over 5 yrs now and has been great

yeah if u want something to scan and clear codes then a simple vchecker will do but nothing beats having the full license vcds or even the lite. as far as good gauges that function as displays and scan tools i havent found one yet.

apparently u can program scangauge to read boost but due to the low sampling rate its not very useful for anything but stock cars and it doesnt give a true reading as well but rather assumes atmospheric pressure is a certain value.

In the end I went with a AUTEL VAG 405.... I couldn't beat the price for what it offered - less than 1/2 price on EBAY compared to domestic sellers.
A friends got the v-checker so will have to compare functionality.

The scangauge can read AFR, Not sure about boost yet, Though I'm still trying to work it out on the 118tsi.

Scangauge II offer for VWW Members

There's a PDF in the link that shows what you can possibly get on the Xgauge.
