Water pump or impellor breaking on gti...

    hey,

If the water pump or impellor goes on a gti, and the owner gets it serviced, and gets the timing belt replaced at the same time by a VW dealer, is it likely that there was any damage caused when this happened?

That's the only information i know, so please give the possible dangers with a car that had the water pump go.

And is it unusual for this to happen on a sub 80,000 km car?

    Much appreciated

The only danger if one went would be the over heating causing head gasket failure.

I had this on my A3. 80000 might be considered early failure but a precautionary change with a cambelt is sensible.

am having my water pump replaced when the timing belt gets done next week. new beetle cabrio 5 years old 60,000k's.
was told by the mechanic when i booked in that another customer had an impeller fail, he was 10 minutes from home when the high temp light came on. he didn't make it home before the engine stopped. engine had to be replaced.
believe the car was less than 12 months old.

hmmm ok, so what tell tale signs of a damaged engine will i see on this car if it was damaged?
it was apparantly serviced by a VW dealer after this happened, so i'll check the details of that.
But as i'll be doing the mechanical checking myself, what should i look out for?
Leaks around the engine, burning oil in the exhaust etc?

My water pump and timing belt were recently replaced as part of the 60,000km service on my Mk IV GTI. Water pump faults aren't unheard of in Mk IVs so better safe than sorry. If you're looking at a car where these items have been replaced at the same time, it was probably done like that to save on the cost of labour to pull everything apart once not twice. Hope that helps.....
