A tape measure will help you with the width.
Check the wheel faq for fitment
    MK4 GTI - Sold
    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
    MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

I would be careful fitting non-standard size tires. Will affect you gearing, fuel economy and speedo accuracy. If your wheels are stock they're probably 6.5 in wide. You got a 4-mo or a 2 litre? Rear camber is an issue when lowering a 4motion.

Big thing is 4mo vs fwd.
If it's fwd you won't get it low enough to warrant smaller tyres. Too much other stuff needs to be altered to get to those heights.
And if it's 4mo you can get it a bit lower with no mods, but your sump will be on the pavement without undersized rubber

Yes, factory size is 205/55/16. Rolling diameter will be out by heaps with the sizes you listed.
You won't need a smaller tyre then that unless you are on bags.
I had 205/55/16s and was bouncing off the odd cats eye towards the end of running coilovers

    Depends how low you go.
40mm need to do something with the sway bar for starts
There is a bag of mods and things that need to be done from there on

Lower it to have matching tyre gap all round, it's not a Commodore.
Sway bar rubs on the drive shaft. Either need longer/shorter links, different sway bar, or remove the bar all together. Depending how low will depend which option is best
