Vw bora gear shifter slipped.

Hey guys
So along with all the other problems the bora has been having lately.. I was driving down the road today not far from home, in 3rd gear about to change to 4th.. Put the clutch in, pull the gear stick down.. And all of the sudden the whole shifter went floppy.. I was stuck in either 3rd or 4th gear.. Luckily i wasnt far from home and did not have to stop once untill i got to my house.
So now im stuck with an undriveable car as the gear stick just flops up an down.. Cannot even move it to the left to go to 1st or 2nd.

If anyone can give me in detail what has happened or how it can be fixed it would be much appreciated because i know next to nothing about this stuff.

Sounds like one of the shift cables has come adrift from the top of the gearbox.

An easy fix as long as all the bits and pieces are still there.
